1914Best.-Nr. 148359London: Macmillan and Co. Limited 1914. The Bombay editions of both volumes of The Jungle Book. Octavo two volumes bound in three-quarters morocco by Morell with gilt titles to the spine in six compartments within raised gilt bands top edge gilt marbled endpapers. One of 1050 copies. In near fine condition. A sharp example. The Jungle Book is a collection of fables which provide moral instruction by using animals anthropomorphically. The inspiration for the book is evident. Kipling was born in India and he spent his childhood there. Interestingly Kipling wrote these stories when he lived in Vermont. The Jungle Book is used to develop the morale of the junior element of the Scouting movement "The Cub Scouts". The name of the head wolf "Akela" has been traditionally given to each Cub Scout pack leader. At least fifteen movies were released based on Kipling's stories beginning with Elephant Boy in 1937. A live-action version of Jungle Book was released in October of 2016 by Walt Disney Pictures. Macmillan and Co., Limited unknown

A classic work of children's literature and one of Kipling's most beloved titles Just So Stories compiles origin tales like "How the Leopard Got its Spots" and "How the Elephant Got his Trunk" and "How the Camel Got His Hump." The book was charmingly illustrated by Kipling himself who reported that the stories were born of out the bedtime tales that he told his daughter. Kipling is of course best known for The Jungle Book and its sequel which earned him the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1907 and secured his place in the canon of English storytelling. Based on folktales and legends that Kipling learned during his childhood in India the Jungle Books were met with huge success upon publication and continue to enthrall readers of all ages to this day. According to Professor Edwin L. Miller their publication "caused even severe critics of Kipling's previous work to admit that he is a writer of inspired genius." Largely focused on man's relationship to nature the Jungle Books in part narrate the tales of Mowgli a human "man-cub" raised by wolves as he tries to find his proper place in the world. For contributions like these Kipling became the first English-language writer and the youngest ever to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature. Fine. Macmillan and Co., Limited unknown

This collection of imaginative fables is the only book in Kipling's corpus to have been illustrated by the author himself. Originally conceived as bedtime stories for the author's daughter the tales and poems included here tell how the first letter and alphabet came to be the origin of animals such as the armadillo and how several animals came to look the way they do the camel for example was sanctioned with a hump for his laziness. Written in a playful and rhythmic style the stories have enchanted generations of young people and earned a place among the classics of children's literature. Macmillan and Co unknown
