1914réf. 009008London: Macmillan and Co. Limited 1914. First English separate edition pamphlet issue. Pamphlet. This is the pamphlet issue of the British first stand-alone publication of Kiplings most famous poem IF- published the first month of the First World War. These are scarce on the market rendering mere survival noteworthy. This copy is in very good condition. The gray card covers remain complete and firmly attached to the contents. There is a contemporary owner name initials and an indecipherable surname inked at the upper right front cover corner just above the double-ruled border. The covers show lightly toned extremities the front cover shows some small spots and moderate soiling and the fore edge corners are lightly bumped. The contents are clean with a touch of trivial spotting. IF- was first published in October 1910 in Rewards and Fairies Kiplings collection of eleven stories and twenty-three poems that was a continuation of the Puck stories first told in 1906s Puck of Pooks Hill. To capitalize on the immediate and immense popularity of IF- the publisher of the American edition of Rewards and Fairies Doubleday Page & Company swiftly followed with a separate publication in 1910. This British edition followed in 1914. There were two issues of this first separate British edition. Macmillan published IF- in July 1914 as both a leaflet and a pamphlet bound in card stock of various shades of gray or brown measuring 16.2 x 11.4 cm lettered and ruled in deep purplish-red. In this pamphlet issue the front cover served as the title page and the text was printed on both sides of two paginated leaves with COPYRIGHT" at the foot of p.4 and advertisements for Kiplings works on the recto and verso of the back cover. Kiplings bibliographer notes three printings of this pamphlet issue the second in September 1914 and third in August 1915 noting that for later issues the year at the bottom of the front cover changes. Although the poem was not collected and published until 1910 inspiration for the poem occurred 15 years earlier in the person of Leander Starr Jameson 1853-1917 leader of the failed Jameson Raid of that year against the Boer Republic of Transvaal that helped precipitate the Second Anglo-Boer War. Despite the fiasco much of the British public treated Jameson as a dashing hero Kipling admired him greatly and in his autobiography Something of Myself Kipling said that "If" was drawn from Jameson's character. The character flaws of the poems muse are an irony. The poems association with the collective anonymized slaughter of the First World War is another. It seems hardly coincidental that this first separate British edition was issued during the first month of the First World War. Indeed a later 1916 edition of the poem was produced in an edition of 30000 as a Xmas and New Year card from the Ladies Buffet staff to the soldiers embarking for the front through Waterloo Station; Kipling waived his royalty cutting the reprint cost. The poems enshrinement of firmness of character and temperament in the face of adversity became inextricably linked to the patriotic offering and sacrifice of so many British sons to the inglorious trenches of the First World War. The association was undoubtedly difficult for Kipling. Fourteen months after this copy of IF- was published Kipling lost his own and only son to the war. John Kipling who had been commissioned in the Irish Guards at the outset of the war had gone to France in August 1915; in September a month after his eighteenth birthday he was reported wounded and missing in the battle of Loos. His body was never found in Kipling's lifetime: the grave was identified in 1992. John's death coincided with the onset of Kipling's suffering from the undiagnosed duodenal ulcer that tormented the last twenty years of his life and that at last killed him. None of the ironies attendant to the poems inspiration and application diminish its beautifully lyrical and enduringly compelling exhortations. réf. 149559Rare pamphlet of Kipling's humorous and ironic poem. Duodecimo original wrappers frontispiece of Kipling pictorial initials six pages. In very good condition. Rare with none appearing at auction in the last 100 years. Rudyard Kipling’s poem “The Betrothed” 1886 first published in Departmental Ditties and Other Verses exemplifies his early mastery of wit irony and social observation. Written during his years in British India the poem humorously explores masculine indulgence and moral choice through the narrator’s mock-serious decision to favor cigars over marriage parodying Victorian ideals of romance and respectability. Beneath its comic tone “The Betrothed” reveals Kipling’s emerging interest in the conflicts between personal pleasure social convention and the disciplined self—a tension that would later define his broader literary treatment of duty and individualism. unknown
réf. 139448London: Macmillan 1978. Finely bound edition of both volumes of The Jungle Book with an exceptional fore-edge painting. Octavo bound in full morocco by Bayntun Bindery gilt titles to the spine raised bands all edges gilt engraved frontispiece with tissue guard present. Illustrated by J. L. Kipling W.H. Drake and P. Frenzeny. In near fine condition. Rare and desirable. The Jungle Book is a collection of fables which provide moral instruction by using animals anthropomorphically. Each story begins and ends with a verse and the original publications contain some illustrations created by Rudyard's father John Lockwood Kipling. The inspiration for the book is evident. Kipling was born in India and he spent his childhood there. Interestingly Kipling wrote these stories when he lived in Vermont. The Jungle Book is used to develop the morale of the junior element of the Scouting movement "The Cub Scouts". The name of the head wolf "Akela" has been traditionally given to each Cub Scout pack leader. At least fifteen movies were released based on Kipling's stories beginning with Elephant Boy in 1937. A live-action anticipated version of Jungle Book will be released in October of 2018 by Warner Brothers. The term 'fore-edge painting' can refer to any painted decoration on the fore-edges of the leaves of a book such as was not uncommon in the 15th and early 16th centuries particularly in Italy. The term is most commonly used however for an English technique quite widely practiced in the second half of the 17th century in London and Edinburgh and popularized in the 18th century by John Brindley and in particular Edwards of Halifax whereby the fore-edge of the book very slightly fanned out and then held fast is decorated with painted views or conversation pieces. The edges are then squared up and gilded in the ordinary way so that the painting remains concealed while the book is closed: fan out the edges and it reappears. The technique was practiced by a few other English binders in the late 18th and 19th centuries and a certain number of undoubted examples survive. The majority of extant examples of fore-edge paintings date to the late 19th and early 20th century on reproductions of books originally published in the early 19th century including the present volume. This publication chronicles one calendar year 2009 during which time Kipling produced 141 drawings each magnificently illustrated here. While Kipling s work is centered upon the outdoors landscape is not a word that can be easily used to describe her work. Neither can it be viewed through the lens of the formal nationalist tradition that the landscape genre carries in Canada. Robin Laurence examines Kipling s attentiveness to the environment that recalls Chinese landscape painting and calligraphy. Darrin Martens pursues the philosophical investigation with a call to look beyond representation to a process that embodies the very act of creation. Rosemarie Tovell explores Kipling's practice as a draftsperson situating it within the historical and aesthetic context of an often misunderstood discipline. . 2011. 0980996287 . Gallery hardcover

Kim unfolds against the backdrop of The Great Game the political conflict between Russia and Britain in Central Asia. "The book presents a vivid picture of India its teeming populations religions and superstitions and the life of the bazaars and the road." Considered by many to be Kipling's masterpiece opinion appears varied about its consideration as children's literature or not. Roger Sale in his history of children's literature concludes "Kim is the apotheosis of the Victorian cult of childhood but it shines now as bright as ever long after the Empire's collapse." It was the basis for the 1950 film starring Errol Flynn Dean Stockwell and Paul Lukas. Named by Modern Library as one of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century.
