1937rif. BIBLIO-56882Macmillan and Co. Ltd London Sussex Edition 1937. From the limited edition of 525 sets of which 500 were for sale. Full russet Niger morocco handmade paper gilt top other edges untrimmed as issued marbled endpapers royal 8vo. xviii 449 1 pp. The Sussex Edition is the finest edition of Kipling's works sumptuously produced and also containing his final thoughts on the text having been revised by Kipling in his last years. Kipling died in 1936 and the edition was published posthumously. Complete sets of the 35 volumes are rare and desirable : only 525 sets were produced and many of these were destroyed when the publisher's warehouse was bombed in 1941. Single volumes such as that offered here are in practice still harder to find : we have a handful only of such single volumes and this represents a possibly unrepeatable chance for one admirer of this early collection of his short stories which first appeared in 1891 to acquire it in the most desirable edition. The contents of this volume are: The Incarnation of Krishna Mulvaney; The Courting of Dinah Shadd; On Greenhow Hill; The Man Who Was; The Head of the District; Without Benefit of Clergy; At the End of the Passage; The Mutiny of the Mavericks; The Mark of the Beast; The Return of Imray; Namgay Doola; The Lang Men O' Larut; Bertran and Bimi; Reingelder and the German Flag; The Wandering Jew; Through the Fire; The Finances of the Gods; The Amir's Homily; Jews in Shushan; The Limitations of Pambé Serang; Little Tobrah; Moti Guj Mutineer; Bubbling Well Road; 'The City of Dreadful Night; Georgie Porgie; Naboth; The Dream of Duncan Parrenness; L'envoi. 1901rif. 159431901. London: Macmillan and Co. 1901. 2 pp undated ads. Original red cloth with Ganesha device in gilt. First English Edition of the book that "is acknowledged as Kipling's masterpiece in fiction. The novel is the finest written about the India of the British Empire" CGEL. It follows the adventures of an orphan son of a British soldier who is raised by an Indian woman becomes a disciple to a Lama and ultimately becomes an undercover agent as well. The illustrations are by John Lockwood Kipling the author's father. The American edition is considered to have been published earlier though in the same month as the English one. As with most of Kipling's British editions published by Macmillan the binding is red cloth with in gilt the "Ganesha" device -- an elephant's head with a swastika the latter had been a ubiquitous symbol in India for millennia; its use ceased in the early 1930s when events in Germany gave the symbol a whole new meaning. This is a very good-plus copy minor rubbing of the elephant-head and at the extremities; as always there is some foxing of the endpapers and of the frontispiece tissue guard. Designated as a "Printers Copy" on front and rear pastedown there are some faded fingerprints on some pages foretips bumped very slightly cocked forged signatures of Eugene Field on the first free endpaper and Rudyard Kipling on the title page else very good. First American edition. In the 1920s and 1930s after burning through his father the poet and children's author Eugene Field's genuine estate his son Eugene "Pinny" Field II teamed up with the Chicago bookseller Harry Dayton Sickles to "enlarge" the late poet's library. In order to manufacture instant provenance for otherwise ordinary books they reproduced Eugene Field Sr's original bookplate oddly not present here wrote signed inscriptions to Field Sr. signed his name and "Chicago" and the date of either 1893 or 1895. They were very fond of forging Kipling's signature. Latest research suggests it was Sickles who was the forger Field the willing accomplice. Note on front free endpaper "Signed by Kipling" apparently someone was fooled. . The Century Co. unknown

Bomanji here recalls Kipling coming into the modelling studio at the J.J. School of Art and inventing 'childish romances around the models of nymphs gnomes and gargoyles'. He was the inspiration for the Just So Story 'How the Rhinoceros got his Wrinkly Skin' in which a rhinoceros steals a cake from a Parsi 'from whose hat the rays of the sun were reflected in more-than-oriental splendour' and lives to regret it hence the mention in his recollection here: 'I never remember giving Rudyard a cake .'.
