1897Best.-Nr. 154961897. With Illustrations by I.W. Taber. London: Macmillan and Co. 1897. 2 pp undated ads. Original blue cloth pictorially decorated in gilt all page edges gilt. First English Edition published about a month after the American. This is Kipling's great novel about the cod fishing fleet of Gloucester Massachusetts written while the newlywed Kiplings lived in Vermont. Kipling freely acknowledged that the book owed much to Dr. James Conland of Brattleboro who brought the Kiplings' elder daughter into the world -- for Conland had been a member of the Massachusetts fishing fleet and it was he who took Kipling to explore the wharves and quays of Boston and Gloucester. The American edition in fact is dedicated to Conland; this English edition bears no dedication. This is the only book of Kipling's which is set entirely in America. All the characters are American. Not only that but the heart of the book -- its moral in a single sentence -- is one of Kipling's main beliefs of this period expressed in terms essentially American or perhaps more particularly New England. He put it later in verse: ".If you don't work you will die!" It is a saga of hard physical work in conflict with natural forces. It is a book which could hardly have been written by anyone who did not admire Huckleberry Finn; it is a book whose claim to survival rests mainly on detail and it is all American detail Mason. CAPTAINS COURAGEOUS was the fourth and last volume to be bound in Macmillan's attractive gift binding style used for the JUNGLE BOOKs in 1894-1895 and for SOLDIER TALES in 1896. In 1937 forty years after publication this tale was made into a film starring Freddie Bartholomew Spencer Tracy who won an Oscar Lionel Barrymore and Mickey Rooney. This is a near-fine copy spine less than bright slight rubbing at the extremities light foxing; the original black-coated endpapers are not cracked. Richards A103; Stewart 163. unknown

Original blue cloth pictorially decorated in gilt all page edges gilt. First English Edition published three days after the American of the sequel to THE JUNGLE BOOK which had been published the year before. It continues with more tales of Mowgli that exemplify "The Laws of the Jungle" -- with illustrations by John Lockwood Kipling Rudyard's father. This was the second of the four Kipling gift books bound similarly by Macmillan with SOLDIER TALES and CAPTAINS COURAGEOUS coming out the following two years respectively. This is an attractive copy very good-plus or possibly near-fine volume slightly askew as usual very light wear at the extremities; atypically other than the endpapers there is no foxing on the leaves within. 1899Best.-Nr. 35064New York: Doubleday & McClure Company 1899. 2 volumes. First American Edition and the first complete authorized book publication of the collection preceding the English edition of 1900. 8vo publisher's original green cloth the upper covers lettered and nautically decorated in black the spines lettered in gilt and with a small gilt nautical device. xiii 460; ix 400 pp. A very fine and handsome set both volumes in remarkable condition. FIRST EDITION OF KIPLINGS JOURNALISM AND TRAVEL WRITING FROM 1887-1889 writings full of humor sharp observation and self-awareness. Many of these pieces were originally written as special correspondence for the 'Civil and Military Gazette' and the 'Pioneer'. Kipling himself explains in the preface that he assembled the pieces because unauthorized publishers had been digging up his newspaper writings and sometimes altering or interpolating them. Thus the 1899 edition represents Kipling's attempt to establish an authorized text of his early travel journalism. The two volumes include: Letters of Marque — Kipling's journey through Rajputana in India; the 37 From Sea to Sea travel letters; The City of Dreadful Night; Among the Railway Folk; The Giridih Coalfields; In an Opium Factory; and The Smith Administration. The principal 'From Sea to Sea' narrative records the extraordinary journey Kipling made when he left India for England in 1889. Instead of simply sailing west the 23-year-old Kipling took the long way around. He left Calcutta on March 9 1889 traveled through Rangoon Moulmein Penang and Singapore went on to Hong Kong and Canton then through Japan—Nagasaki Kobe Kyoto and Yokohama. He sailed from Yokohama for San Francisco arriving May 28 and then wandered across North America before eventually sailing from New York for England in September. The American portion is particularly entertaining. Kipling writes about San Francisco Oregon and the Clackamas River Yellowstone Salt Lake City Omaha and Chicago among other places. There is even a chapter recounting his interview with Mark Twain. Doubleday & McClure Company hardcover

"The next important task I undertook was the illustration of an edition of Rudyard Kipling's A Song of the English to be published by Hodder & Stoughton in the year 1908. It became necessary for me to meet the author and discuss the proposed book with him. For this purpose I travelled down to Burwash where he lived at that time. This was an excursion I shall always remember. I was met at Heathfield and journeyed thence in a motor-car. There were few cars on the road in those days and this in itself was a joyful experience as we drove through the pleasant Sussex lanes. Bateman's the house at Burwash where Rudyard Kipling lived was a fine old building with stone mullioned windows. It was in the midst of wind-blown Sussex country. There was a faint smell of the sea in the air wafted across the few miles of country from the shore where the Coastwise lights of England watch the ships of England go. It was a fitting setting in which to find the author of A Song of the English. He met and entertained me with a quiet affability which speedily removed the shyness I felt at first in his presence. Before long I was quite at home with him. His own knowledge of illustration gave him an appreciation of the artist's point of view. While making suggestions he realized that the illustrator must have as free a hand as possible. His sympathetic understanding of my part in the undertaking made me feel that I was consulting with a brother artist. I spent a happy and for me a helpful day. It was a great inspiration for the work I had in hand to be in such close association with the author's interesting personality. I am always glad to remember that he was satisfied with my illustrations to his book." W.
