FREE UPGRADE to Courier/Priority Shipping Upon Request - IN STOCK AND IMMEDIATELY AVAILABLE FOR SHIPMENT - Flawless copy brand new pristine never opened -- 144 pages; 150 illustrations in color. -- with a bonus offer--; Since 1960 drawing has been the sole form of expression of British Columbia-based artist Ann Kipling. This publication chronicles one calendar year 2009 during which time Kipling produced 141 drawings each magnificently illustrated here. While Kipling s work is centered upon the outdoors landscape is not a word that can be easily used to describe her work. Neither can it be viewed through the lens of the formal nationalist tradition that the landscape genre carries in Canada. Robin Laurence examines Kipling s attentiveness to the environment that recalls Chinese landscape painting and calligraphy. Darrin Martens pursues the philosophical investigation with a call to look beyond representation to a process that embodies the very act of creation. Rosemarie Tovell explores Kipling's practice as a draftsperson situating it within the historical and aesthetic context of an often misunderstood discipline. . 2011. 0980996287 . Gallery hardcover

ref. 16746KIPLING Rudyard. Rewards and Fairies. Toronto: Macmillan Company of Canada 1910. First Edition of Kipling's collection of short stories and poems including the first printing of Kipling's famous poem "If--" arguably his masterpiece and the most influential work of his lifetime. Octavo. Publisher's original red cloth gilt lettering to spine and gilt decorative elephant medallion to cover. Illustrated black and white plates by Frank Craig. 338 pages In very good condition. Minor bumping to corners and age-related toning. Head and tail of spine worn but pages unmarked and binding firm. The poem's emphasis on overcoming adversity continues to resonate with readers all over the world. "If--" If you can keep your head when all about you Are losing theirs and blaming it on you If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you But make allowance for their doubting too; If you can wait and not be tired by waiting Or being lied about don't deal in lies Or being hated don't give way to hating And yet don't look too good nor talk too wise: If you can dream-and not make dreams your master; If you can think-and not make thoughts your aim; If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster And treat those two impostors just the same; If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools Or watch the things you gave your life to broken And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools: If you can make one heap of all your winnings And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss And lose and start again at your beginnings And never breathe a word about your loss; If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew To serve your turn long after they are gone And so hold on when there is nothing in you Except the Will which says to them: 'Hold on!' If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue Or walk with Kings-nor lose the common touch If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you If all men count with you but none too much; If you can fill the unforgiving minute With sixty seconds' worth of distance run Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it And-which is more-you'll be a Man my son! unknown books

A fine excellent example. "This most desirable pair will always fill an honorable place in any library of children's books" Quayle 87. Richards A76 & A85; Stewart 123 & 132. Livingston 104 116. A lovely mixed set of one of the cornerstone titles in children's literature and Kipling highlight and along with Just So Stories his most beloved work. First published in magazine format in 1893-4. British Nobel laureate Rudyard Kipling was born in India lived there & in England & wrote these stories when he lived in Vermont. The tales are fables using animals in an anthropomorphic manner to give moral lessons. The verses of The Law of the Jungle for example lay down rules for the safety of individuals families and communities. Kipling put in them nearly everything he knew or "heard or dreamed about the Indian jungle." Other readers have interpreted the work as allegories of the politics & society of the time. The best-known of them are the three stories revolving around the adventures of an abandoned "man cub" Mowgli who is raised by wolves in the Indian Jungle with the help of Baloo the bear and Bagheera the black panther & then has to fight the tiger Shere Khan. The most famous of the other stories are probably "Rikki-Tikki-Tavi" the story of a heroic mongoose and "Toomai of the Elephants" the tale of a young elephant-handler. "The White Seal" in which the main character seeks a haven for his people where they would be safe from hunters has been considered a metaphor for Zionism then in its beginning. As with much of Kipling's work each of the stories is preceded by a piece of verseand succeeded by another. MacMillan unknown
