1901ref. 147661901. in 1901 dust jacket London: Macmillan and Co. 1901. 2 pp undated ads. Original red cloth with Ganesha device in gilt with dust jacket. First English Edition of the book that "is acknowledged as Kipling's masterpiece in fiction. The novel is the finest written about the India of the British Empire" CGEL. It follows the adventures of an orphan son of a British soldier who is raised by an Indian woman becomes a disciple to a Lama and ultimately becomes an undercover agent as well. The illustrations are by John Lockwood Kipling the author's father. The American edition is considered to have been published earlier though in the same month as the English one. As with most of Kipling's British editions published by Macmillan the binding is red cloth with in gilt the "Ganesha" device -- an elephant's head with a swastika the latter had been a ubiquitous symbol in India for millennia; its use ceased in the early 1930s when events in Germany gave the symbol a whole new meaning. This volume is in bright just-about-fine condition just a touch of wear at the head of the spine. Included is the quite scarce 1901 dust jacket in its first state listing on the rear panel 14 titles in the Uniform Edition with THE NAULAHKA at the bottom and with KIM at the top with no statement of print number. The jacket is in good-to-very good condition spine quite darkened so as to be illegible wear particularly at the ends of the jacket's spine. Richards A174; Stewart 254; Livingston 250. One of the books selected as a "Modern Library 100" for the 20th Century seldom seen in jacket. unknown books

1919ref. 149313London: His Majesty's Stationery Office 1919. Exceptionally rare first edition of this pamphlet honoring every British soldier who died in World War I. Oblong octavo original publisher's pictorial wrappers illustrated with black and white drawings of the cemeteries and memorials as they will appear completed throughout. In near fine condition. Illustrated by Mr. Douglas Macpherson. Housed in a custom red portfolio with gilt titles to the front panel and string ties. Rudyard Kipling’s The Graves of the Fallen 1919 written for the Imperial War Graves Commission articulates the moral and aesthetic vision behind the design and commemoration of British and Commonwealth soldiers’ graves after World War I. Serving as the Commission’s literary adviser Kipling helped shape its guiding principles of equality in death—ensuring that all soldiers regardless of rank or class were memorialized with identical headstones and inscriptions. The text blends solemn prose with restrained idealism reflecting both personal grief—Kipling’s son was killed in the war—and a collective commitment to remembrance. Lacks Part One of “From Sea to Sea” Volume XV otherwise a very fine set text and plates are clean and crisp and bound in handsome period binding. . Edition: New York Binding: Original publisher’s black ½ morocco with light blue marble boards spine in six compartments of raised bands and gilt floral motifs gilt text in two and three top edges gilt edges uncut occasionally unopened endpapers marbled. Notes: The later volumes vols XXVI XXVII & XXVIII are published in purple and dark blue boards. The “Outward Bound” edition was published in installments between 1897 until the end of Kipling’s life in 1936. The complete set eventually included 36 volumes; however variations appeared in the printing over the years. Text published in two volumes in earlier printings was combined into single volumes to save money on the part of the publishers. The published letters of Rudyard Kipling 2004 indicate that Kipling often disapproved of the cost-saving measures of Scribner’s preferring that later printings kept the same numeration of the volumes as the earlier ones. Size: 8vo. Illustration: Each volume with a frontispiece several illustrative plates throughout. Volume: 27 volumes of 36. I always said that the Oriental thief can give his white brothers many points in the game. The necklace he chose was amethyst & pearl - not emerald & pearl - and it is a beauty. I should very much like to be able to afford a white pearl necklace. Do you suppose the price would be very heavy I should like to have an idea on this subject. 1894ref. 120935London: Macmillan 1894-95. First editions of both volumes of The Jungle Book. Octavo two volumes original blue cloth decorated and lettered in gilt all edges gilt engraved frontispiece with tissue guard present. Illustrated by J. L. Kipling W.H. Drake and P. Frenzeny. In very good condition. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. The Jungle Book is a collection of fables which provide moral instruction by using animals anthropomorphically. Each story begins and ends with a verse and the original publications contain some illustrations created by Rudyard's father John Lockwood Kipling. The inspiration for the book is evident. Kipling was born in India and he spent his childhood there. Interestingly Kipling wrote these stories when he lived in Vermont. The Jungle Book is used to develop the morale of the junior element of the Scouting movement "The Cub Scouts". The name of the head wolf "Akela" has been traditionally given to each Cub Scout pack leader. At least fifteen movies were released based on Kipling's stories beginning with Elephant Boy in 1937. A live-action anticipated version of Jungle Book will be released in October of 2018 by Warner Brothers. Macmillan hardcover books

1886ref. 540FIRST EDITION tall narrow 4to half red morocco over marbled boards original light brown printed wrappers that double as an Indian civil service envelope preserved marbled endpapers bookplates of William Garth and William Marchbank Lahore the Civil and Military Press 1886. The First Edition of Kipling's first published work. Previous work was either printed privately offprints or collaborative books. Kipling was sub-editor of the Civil and Military Gazette an Anglophone newspaper reporting from Lahore on the life of the Civil Service and the Indian Army in Punjab. Thanks to his occupation and his family's social standing he had many opportunities to explore the full range of life in India. He remained keenly observant of the thronging spectacle of native India which had engaged his interest and affection from earliest childhood. He was quickly filling the journals he worked for with prose sketches and light verse. Kipling began inserting his own poems under the heading of Departmental Ditties into the newspaper and then produced this edition made up to look like a bundle of civil service memoranda.
