1937rif. BIBLIO-56881Macmillan and Co. Ltd London Sussex Edition 1937. From the limited edition of 525 sets of which 500 were for sale. Full russet Niger morocco handmade paper gilt top other edges untrimmed as issued royal 8vo. xiii 432 1 pp. The Sussex Edition is the finest edition of Kipling's works sumptuously produced and also containing his final thoughts on the text having been revised by Kipling in his last years. Kipling died in 1936 and the edition was published posthumously. Complete sets of the 35 volumes are rare and desirable : only 525 sets were produced and many of these were destroyed when the publisher's warehouse was bombed in 1941. Single volumes such as that offered here are in practice still harder to find : we have a handful only of such single volumes and this represents a possibly unrepeatable chance for one admirer of this early collection of his short stories which first appeared in 1898 to acquire it in the most desirable edition. The contents of this volume are: Signed by the author and numbered 271. Head of spine bumped and somewhat worn with minor wear also to corners three small dents to rear board some ubtrimmed edges slightly darkened or duststained partly unopened otherwise Very Good. 1897rif. 153245London: Macmillan and Co. 1897. First edition of Kipling’s classic tale of the Grand Banks cod fishery a coming-of-age story long regarded as one of the great novels of the nineteenth century. Octavo original blue cloth elegantly stamped and lettered in gilt all edges gilt with a frontispiece and 21 illustrations. In very good condition with rubbing inscription to the half-title page. Illustrated by I.W. Taber. Like his two Jungle Books Kipling wrote this morality tale of life aboard a New England fishing boat while living near Brattleboro Vermont his wife’s hometown. The book thus contains “something of his feelings about America—both his affection and his irritation” Carpenter & Prichard 296. “This is the only book of Kipling’s which is set entirely in America. All the characters are American. Not only that but the heart of the book—its moral in a single sentence—is one of Kipling’s main beliefs of this period expressed in terms essentially American or perhaps more particularly New England. He put it later in verse: ‘And the Gods of the Copy-book Maxims said: ‘If you don’t work you will die!’ It is a saga of hard physical work in conflict with natural forces. It is a book which could hardly have been written by anyone who did not admire Huckleberry Finn; it is a book whose claim to survival rests mainly on detail and it is all American detail” Mason 119.
