1901rif. 009002London: Macmillan and Co. Ltd. 1901. First edition. Hardcover. This is the first English edition of Kim considered to be Kiplings greatest work and the finest novel about the India of the British Empire. Bound in red cloth with a gilt circular elephant vignette on the front cover and gilt spine lettering it is illustrated with ten photographic plates of clay reliefs including the frontispiece by the author's father John Lockwood Kipling. This copy is in very good plus condition clean and bright. The original red cloth binding is square tight and retains deep unfaded color with no color shift between the covers and spine bright gilt and only faint trivial blemishes. Wear is minimal including gently bruised lower corners a faint dent to the center fore edges and wrinkling at the spine ends. The contents are bright and all illustrated plates are present. We find no previous owner marks. Spotting is primarily confined to the endpapers the frontispiece the facing title page and the intact tissue guard between them. The gilt top edges remain uniformly bright. The fore and bottom edges show mild age-toning. The lovely binding is protected beneath a clear removable mylar cover. Among Kiplings tales of India perhaps none eclipses his masterpiece Kim. This is the story of Kimball OHara an Irish orphan who goes from begging on the streets of Lahore to being a spy for the British simultaneously taking a spiritual journey that conflicts with his new obligations to the Empire. Kims context is the Great Game that pitted Russia against Britain for control of the subcontinent in the wake of the Second Afghan War 1878-1880. Kiplings career as a journalist afforded him travel to the major cities of India a breadth of geographic experience with the subcontinent that informs the sweeping settings of Kim. The British first edition of Kim published the same month as its U.S. first edition counterpart followed serialization in the United States in McClures Magazine from December 1900 through October 1901 and in Britain in Cassells Magazine from January through November 1901. Chosen by the New York Public Library as one of its books of the century Kim was Kiplings final book about India and was called magical upon publication. When the orphaned Kimball OHara joins a Buddhist lama in his search for the River of Healing the reader not only beholds a kaleidoscope of people and settings through Kims eyes but also feels the native social and spiritual currents of India moving beneath the political veneer of imperial ambitions and authority. Bengali critic Niraud Chaudhuri called Kim the finest novel in the English language dealing with an Indian theme. Kim was also included in the Modern Librarys list of the 100 best English-language books of the 20th century. Joseph Rudyard Kipling 1865-1936 was an English poet short-story writer and novelist chiefly remembered for his celebration of British imperialism stories and poems of British India and his tales for children. Despite this reputation Kiplings extraordinary body of work eludes all labels in its range and variety Kipling's work is not only of the highest artistic excellence it is deeply humane and fully expresses the sense of one of his favourite texts: Praised be Allah for the diversity of his creatures. Kipling was in his twenties when his stories of Anglo-Indian life made him a literary celebrity and he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1907. Kipling was the first English language author awarded and remains the youngest person to receive the Prize. References: Richards A174; ODNB Books of the Century Macmillan and Co., Ltd. hardcover
1906rif. 004331London: Macmillan & Co. Ltd. 1906. First edition. Hardcover. Harold R. Millar. This is a magnificent copy of the British first edition second printing in the exceptionally scarce dust jacket. The second printing was issued the same month as the first printing and is nearly identical. The dust jacket differs from that of the first printing only in adding Puck of Pook's Hill to the list of Kipling titles on the rear panel. The volume differs only in the copyright page notation of the second printing. Puck of Pooks Hill is Kiplings abidingly English collection of ten stories and sixteen poems informed by English history and animated by English mythology for a youthful audience this British first edition published with twenty illustrations by Harold R. Millar. This is the first publication of the sixteen poems. Preceding the British and American first editions the stories had appeared in Strand Magazine as well as in Ladies Home Journal and McClures Magazine in America. Several minor changes were made in the story texts as printed in book form and there are numerous but unimportant textual differences between the English and American Editions. Richards A205 This copy is rare thus fine in a very good dust jacket. The red cloth binding is improbably bright and clean tight with sharp corners vivid gilt and no appreciable wear. The contents are pristine crisp and bright with no previous ownership marks no spotting clean fore and bottom edges and bright gilt top edge. The endpapers show differential toning corresponding to the dust jacket flaps. A single leaf verso and recto bound in at the rear advertises other works by Kipling. The sole previous ownership mark is a tiny Times Book Club sticker affixed to the lower rear pastedown. The dust jacket shows only trivial loss at the spine head and corners with moderate overall soiling and short closed tears to the upper hinges and upper edge of the rear panel. The spine shows mild toning but the red print remains distinct. The dust jacket is protected beneath a removable archival quality clear cover. When first published Kipling referred to the first four stories as part of scheme of mine for trying to give children not a notion of history but a notion of time sense which is at the bottom of all history that rightly understood means love of ones fellow man and the land one lives in. Letters 3 p.189 Siblings Dan and Una of rural Sussex are reciting A Midsummer Nights Dream to one another on Midsummer Eve near the titular Pooks Hill when they summon Puck a small brown broad-shouldered pointy-eared person with a snub nose slanting blue eyes and a wicked twinkle in his eye. Puck introduces himself as the oldest Old Thing in England and introduces a procession of figures from English history among them a Roman centurion a Saxon monk a Norman knight a Viking sea captain and so on. Rewards and Fairies published in 1910 added additional stories and poems. ODNB Kipling was in his twenties when his stories of Anglo-Indian life made him a literary celebrity and he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1907 the year after this book was published. This book has two instances - on the gilt front cover device and on the half title verso of the swastika symbol prevalent in Kiplings published works an ancient symbol of good fortune used at least 5000 years before being perverted by Hitlers Reich. For Kipling's friendship with the Trotters from his time at the Cape see Thomas Pinney ed. The Letters of Rudyard Kipling 1990 volume 4 page 393. There is an article about Kipling's involvement with the Trotters by Tanya Barben which includes the paragraph "The Kiplings were quickly absorbed into Cape Town's social scene often through Rhodes's contacts. Alys Fane-Trotter the doyenne of writers about Cape architecture at the time recalled that the 'Kiplings were charming to us and Rudyard would spend the afternoon sitting on our very humble stoep drawing wonderful pictures for the children and telling us first drafts of stories he expected to write".
