I know that you will understand that letter-writing is outside the possibilities these days; we are all so hard at work. I though of you when I was At Dartmouth. I was only there twenty-four hours; I went for a certain purpose and returned directly I achieved it. Trix is still at Jersey and the news is about the same. I have myself some hope that the war may serve to rouse here a little." 1 side 4to. Bateman's Burwash Sussex headed paper 22nd August Sybil Heeley was the daughter of Wilfred Lucas Heeley Kipling used to spell the surname Healey. He had been a schoolfriend of Edward Burne-Jones in Birmingham and had been engaged to Kipling's aunt Caroline. Trix is Kipling's younger sister Alice. At the beginning of the First World War like many other writers Kipling wrote pamphlets and poems enthusiastically supporting the UK war aims of restoring Belgium after it had been occupied by Germany together with generalised statements that Britain was standing up for the cause of good. In September 1914 Kipling was asked by the government to write propaganda an offer that he accepted. In 1914 Kipling was one of 53 leading British authors a number that included H. G. Wells Arthur Conan Doyle and Thomas Hardy who signed their names to the "Authors' Declaration." This manifesto declared that the German invasion of Belgium had been a brutal crime and that Britain "could not without dishonour have refused to take part in the present war." unknown
rif. 021177[Napoléon] Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936), écrivain anglais, prix Nobel de littérature 1907. L.S., Burwash, 6 juin 1927, 1p in-4. A l'historien Joseph Coudurier de Chassaigne (1878-1961), en anglais, pour le remercier de l'envoi de son livre. On notera cette belle phrase sur Napoléon dont l'importance est similaire à la chute d'un astéroïde sur la terre. « Dear Coudurier, That superb History of Napoleon (for it is little less than that) came in a couple of days ago, and your letter later. I make haste to send you my most grateful thanks before I send it off to be bound as a treasure.. My compliments on the last clause of your Preface. Yes, his impact on the world (to extend your comparison) was like that of an asteroid from out of space - making a crater, it is true, but affecting atmosphere and events in every quarter of the world. With renewed and most grateful thanks, Very sincerely yours, Rudyard Kipling ». [520]

Bateman's Burwash Sussex headed paper 2nd June In 1902 Kipling bought Bateman's a house built in 1634 and located in rural Burwash. Bateman's was Kipling's home from 1902 until his death in 1936. The house and its surrounding buildings the mill and 33 acres were bought for £9300. It had no bathroom no running water upstairs and no electricity but Kipling loved it: "Behold us lawful owners of a grey stone lichened house A.D. 1634 over the door beamed panelled with old oak staircase and all untouched and unfaked. It is a good and peaceable place. We have loved it ever since our first sight of it" The recipient is very likely Kipling's friend Sir Charles OMAN 1860-1946 who was an eminent historian and Member of Parliament for Oxford. Oman nominated Kipling for the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1907 which he was then awarded. He is also remembered for having received a presentation copy of a book from Kipling in 1907 which contained on its flyleaf the holograph manuscript of an as-yet-unpublished and later celebrated poem of Kipling's titled "The Coin Speaks". "The Don begins to move" is a reference to the new express train built by Doncaster Works which entered into service in 1922 but which doesn't seem to have impressed Kipling very favourably. unknown

Complete with twenty-two plates and text illustrations throughout. Spine in compartments with raised bands and elephant motif. All edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. Original cloth cover bound in at rear. A very attractive example clean and bright throughout in a charming binding. A classic work of children's literature and one of Kipling's most beloved titles Just So Stories compiles origin tales like "How the Leopard Got its Spots" and "How the Elephant Got his Trunk" and "How the Camel Got His Hump." The book was charmingly illustrated by Kipling himself who reported that the stories were born of out the bedtime tales that he told his daughter. Kipling is of course best known for The Jungle Book and its sequel which earned him the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1907 and secured his place in the canon of English storytelling. Based on folktales and legends that Kipling learned during his childhood in India the Jungle Books were met with huge success upon publication and continue to enthrall readers of all ages to this day. According to Professor Edwin L. Miller their publication "caused even severe critics of Kipling's previous work to admit that he is a writer of inspired genius." Largely focused on man's relationship to nature the Jungle Books in part narrate the tales of Mowgli a human "man-cub" raised by wolves as he tries to find his proper place in the world. For contributions like these Kipling became the first English-language writer and the youngest ever to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature. Fine. Macmillan and Co., Limited unknown

Written in a playful and rhythmic style the stories have enchanted generations of young people and earned a place among the classics of children's literature. Macmillan and Co unknown
