In addition to the enhanced line of stories you will see on this restored book one of the first examples of Rudyard's 'elephant swastika lotus leaf motifs' which became Rudyard's emblem for the next 30 years. Rudyard Kipling gave this edition to Colonel Arthur Cory father of author Annie Sophie Cory whose pen name was Victoria Cross. In turn Colonel Cory on his return to London from Lahore sold this book for £5 to Jack Lang's grandfather. Overall this book is in a good condition. Frost Books was gifted this book by Jack Lang from Jack's Cambridge library. NOTE: This is an original book from the library gathered by the famous Cambridge Don computer scientist food and wine connoisseur Jack Arnold LANG. Note: Jack founded the Michelin Guide 'Midsummer House'- Cambridge's paramount restaurant. This dining experience is hidden amongst the grassy pastures and grazing cattle of Midsummer Common and perched on the banks of the River Cam. In 2008 Jack was one of the co-founders of the Raspberry Pi Foundation alongside other members of the Department and acted as the Foundation's Chair. The project's original goals were modest: to build and distribute low-cost computers for prospective applicants to our Computer Science degree. Initially the project was a "success disaster" as Jack would say as demand far outstripped the low-scale manufacturing plans. Ultimately the Raspberry Pi became the UK's most successful computer with more than 60 million sold to date. Jack was drawn to the educational possibilities of the Raspberry Pi its potential uses in emerging economies and the way it could support self-directed learning. Macmillan & Co. hardcover

1897Best.-Nr. 211Kipling Rudyard. Hindu Tales In Black and White. Translated from English by V.N. Ofrosimov. St. Petersburg 1897 107 pp. 22 x 15 cm. Kipling is the most "Russian" of all Western writers of the 20th century not in terms of character or worldview but in terms of the intensity of his influence. No other country in the world loved The Jungle Book so much the best cartoon based on it was made in the USSR the best music for the radio play was written by Gubaidulina herself children of all Soviet generations played Mowgli Bagheera and Shere Khan and by the way we correctly adjusted the gender of Kipling's two main characters. The cat who walks by himself became a cat in our version and the fairy tale became more accurate funnier and more sarcastic and Bagheera who was also a brave young man in Kipling's version turned into a cunning queen of the jungle sometimes protecting Mowgli sometimes in love with him; a kind of Catherine with a young favorite. But most importantly Kipling became the foremost poet in Russia. At the same time he is rather marginal in England and even more so in the United States where incidentally his favorite was Eliot an avant-gardist and certainly not an imperialist; "A bad poet who writes excellent poems" he said of Kipling and this is a very accurate description. Despite Kipling's popularity in the USSR translations of his works began long before the October Revolution and the establishment of Soviet power. The first translations appeared in 1896 and at the beginning of the 20th century several new translations were published each year. In 1916 an 11-volume collection of his works was released. The book on offer Hindu Tales 1897 is one of the first translations of Kipling into Russian. It is in decent condition with a worn cover from the era and the stamp of a private collector. WorldCat shows only two copies in libraries worldwide Berkeley and Yale.
