1901rif. 147661901. in 1901 dust jacket London: Macmillan and Co. 1901. 2 pp undated ads. Original red cloth with Ganesha device in gilt with dust jacket. First English Edition of the book that "is acknowledged as Kipling's masterpiece in fiction. The novel is the finest written about the India of the British Empire" CGEL. It follows the adventures of an orphan son of a British soldier who is raised by an Indian woman becomes a disciple to a Lama and ultimately becomes an undercover agent as well. The illustrations are by John Lockwood Kipling the author's father. The American edition is considered to have been published earlier though in the same month as the English one. As with most of Kipling's British editions published by Macmillan the binding is red cloth with in gilt the "Ganesha" device -- an elephant's head with a swastika the latter had been a ubiquitous symbol in India for millennia; its use ceased in the early 1930s when events in Germany gave the symbol a whole new meaning. This volume is in bright just-about-fine condition just a touch of wear at the head of the spine. Included is the quite scarce 1901 dust jacket in its first state listing on the rear panel 14 titles in the Uniform Edition with THE NAULAHKA at the bottom and with KIM at the top with no statement of print number. The jacket is in good-to-very good condition spine quite darkened so as to be illegible wear particularly at the ends of the jacket's spine. Richards A174; Stewart 254; Livingston 250. One of the books selected as a "Modern Library 100" for the 20th Century seldom seen in jacket. unknown books

1518rif. 022154Naulakha Waite Vermont 15 June 1896. Framed Letter. Not examined out of frame. Appears Fine. Humorous handwritten one-page letter SIGNED "Rudyard Kipling" on his Naulakha Waite Vermont stationery to William Livingston Alden. In full: "Many thanks for your kind little note. It's a rummy land this side but there's a heap of material that I've got out of it. however i shall be clearing out in the Fall to get the taste out of my mouth. You see the devil of it is that a reporter once found out from a hired Swede girl that I occasionally sat down to dinner in that kind of rig which the downtrodden subjects of an effete monarchy call evening dress. Since then I have been considered with suspicion. But you'll see me come along in time back to civilization with a bicycle and a fishing-rod." Attractively and professionally matted and framed with a photographic reproduction of Kipling to an overall size of 15-1/2" x 13." Alden was an American journalist humorist and writer of fiction. He had been Consul General in Rome 1885-89 and from 1892 until his death in 1908 he lived in London where he was a regular contributor to magazines. The letterhead is of interest as in 1895 the U. S. Postmaster General authorized a special post office since Kipling received more mail than the largest business in the area. Waite Vermont existed solely in the home of and was named for the Kiplings' neighbor Anna F. Waite who was appointed Postmistress. The Kiplings left Vermont not long after this letter was written never to return Waite Vermont ceased to exist the following year. Today philatelists prize the Waite postmark being the only post office ever created for an individual. Kipling wrote THE JUNGLE BOOK and CAPTAINS COURAGEOUS in Vermont. It is said that Kipling's Naulakha is where skiing was introduced to Vermont and the site of the state's first tennis court. unknown

1895rif. 4161London: Macmillan 1895. First editions. Near Fine. Original publisher's cloth bindings with gilt to spines and boards. All edges brightly gilt. Gentle bumping to extremities. Small knick to the spine of Jungle Book and dampstain at the lower gutter of the first and last few leaves. Dark green endpapers. Internally both copies bright and clean with just a bit of scattered foxing to the second. An attractive pair of Kipling's most memorable works. Based on folk tales and legends that Kipling learned during his childhood in India but written while in Vermont. This work of several inter-related short stories met with huge success upon publication and continues to enthrall readers of all ages to this day. According to Professor Edwin L. Miller their publication "caused even severe critics of Kipling's previous work to admit that he is a writer of inspired genius." Largely focused on man's relationship to nature The Jungle Books in part narrate the tales of Mowgli a human man-cub raised by wolves as he tries to find his proper place in the world. As he struggles with his own identity he finds allies and adversaries among the animal communities through which he travels. They also include the story of Rikki-Tikki-Tavi the heroic mongoose who would later inspire an animated short voiced by Orson Welles. For contributions like these Kipling became the first English-language writer and the youngest ever to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature. Near Fine. Macmillan unknown books

rif. 06200Burwash Sussex: 1920. I Like It Very Much" Rudyard Kipling Critiques a Poem by "The Bath Railway Poet" A Fine Two-Page Autograph Letter Signed to Henry Chappell With the Original Autograph Envelope and Portrait KIPLING Rudyard 1865-1936. Autograph letter signed "Rudyard Kipling" to Henry Chappell the celebrated "Bath Railway Poet" discussing Chappell's poem The Chaplet and suggesting a possible place of publication. Bateman's Burwash Sussex February 7 1920. Two octavo pages written in ink on a single folded sheet of Kipling's headed stationery printed "BURWASH / ETCHINGHAM" and "BATEMAN'S / BURWASH / SUSSEX." Dated in Kipling's hand "Feb. 7. 1920" and marked "Private" at the head. Signed at the conclusion "Rudyard Kipling." Together with the original autograph addressed envelope addressed by Kipling to: "Henry Chappell Esq. G.W. Ry. Station Bath Somerset" and initialed by him "RK" at lower left. Mounted framed and glazed double-sided together with a photographic portrait of Kipling and an engraved brass plaque "RUDYARD KIPLING 1865-1936 Author." Photograph approximately 9 1/2 x 7 1/2 inches 241 x 190 mm. Overall frame size 16 3/4 x 20 5/8 inches 425 x 524 mm. A particularly appealing literary letter from Rudyard Kipling to fellow poet Henry Chappell offering both praise and criticism of Chappell's verse and practical advice concerning its publication. Kipling writes thanking Chappell for sending him his poem The Chaplet. He tells him that he likes the poem "very much" though with the characteristically forthright reservation "barring 'hauteur' in the first verse." He then turns from literary criticism to the practical question of publication telling Chappell: "I don't know exactly what would be a good place to publish it in just now - unless perhaps you tried the Express." The recommendation was especially appropriate. Chappell had achieved national recognition through the publication in the Daily Express of his patriotic poem The Day shortly after the outbreak of the First World War. Contemporary accounts identify Chappell as a railway porter at Bath and record that The Day appeared in the Daily Express on August 22 1914. The second page concludes with Kipling's warm good wishes and his full autograph signature "Rudyard Kipling." The letter is considerably more interesting than a routine Kipling note. It reveals Kipling acting as a fellow craftsman and informal literary adviser: reading Chappell's poem closely enough to object to a particular word in its opening verse nevertheless praising the work as a whole and suggesting where the younger poet might seek publication. Henry CHAPPELL 1874-1937 was a poet and railwayman who became widely known as "The Bath Railway Poet." Working as a railway porter at Bath he attracted widespread attention following the appearance of The Day in the Daily Express in August 1914. The poem was subsequently reproduced and circulated widely establishing Chappell's reputation well beyond the railway community. The present letter provides an appealing connection between two very different literary careers: Kipling Nobel laureate and one of the most famous English writers of his generation and Chappell the working railwayman whose wartime verse had unexpectedly brought him national attention. Joseph Rudyard KIPLING 1865-1936 was born in Bombay and became one of the most celebrated English writers of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. His works include The Jungle Book 1894 The Second Jungle Book 1895 Kim 1901 and Just So Stories for Little Children 1902 as well as such celebrated poems as "Mandalay" "Gunga Din" "Recessional" and "If -." In 1907 he became the first English-language writer to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature. Burwash, Sussex: , 1920 unknown
