In grey-green wrappers protected by beautiful timely and authentic red thatch indian cloth binding. Both covers present front loose. Has had some professional restoration. Minor wear to cloth spine. Cover designs were engraved by Brownlow Fforde. Wheeler first published this collection in 1890 shortly after Kipling left India and without his permission. "The next important task I undertook was the illustration of an edition of Rudyard Kipling's A Song of the English to be published by Hodder & Stoughton in the year 1908. It became necessary for me to meet the author and discuss the proposed book with him. For this purpose I travelled down to Burwash where he lived at that time. This was an excursion I shall always remember. I was met at Heathfield and journeyed thence in a motor-car. There were few cars on the road in those days and this in itself was a joyful experience as we drove through the pleasant Sussex lanes. Bateman's the house at Burwash where Rudyard Kipling lived was a fine old building with stone mullioned windows. It was in the midst of wind-blown Sussex country. There was a faint smell of the sea in the air wafted across the few miles of country from the shore where the Coastwise lights of England watch the ships of England go. It was a fitting setting in which to find the author of A Song of the English. He met and entertained me with a quiet affability which speedily removed the shyness I felt at first in his presence. Before long I was quite at home with him. His own knowledge of illustration gave him an appreciation of the artist's point of view. While making suggestions he realized that the illustrator must have as free a hand as possible. His sympathetic understanding of my part in the undertaking made me feel that I was consulting with a brother artist. I spent a happy and for me a helpful day. It was a great inspiration for the work I had in hand to be in such close association with the author's interesting personality. I am always glad to remember that he was satisfied with my illustrations to his book." W. Heath Robinson My Line of Life. pp.126-127 "This poem originally appeared in The English Illustrated Magazine May 1893 prior to its inclusion in The Seven Seas 1896" Martindell. Beare 61b. 1914rif. 009008London: Macmillan and Co. Limited 1914. First English separate edition pamphlet issue. Pamphlet. This is the pamphlet issue of the British first stand-alone publication of Kiplings most famous poem IF- published the first month of the First World War. These are scarce on the market rendering mere survival noteworthy. This copy is in very good condition. The gray card covers remain complete and firmly attached to the contents. There is a contemporary owner name initials and an indecipherable surname inked at the upper right front cover corner just above the double-ruled border. The covers show lightly toned extremities the front cover shows some small spots and moderate soiling and the fore edge corners are lightly bumped. The contents are clean with a touch of trivial spotting. IF- was first published in October 1910 in Rewards and Fairies Kiplings collection of eleven stories and twenty-three poems that was a continuation of the Puck stories first told in 1906s Puck of Pooks Hill. To capitalize on the immediate and immense popularity of IF- the publisher of the American edition of Rewards and Fairies Doubleday Page & Company swiftly followed with a separate publication in 1910. This British edition followed in 1914. There were two issues of this first separate British edition. Macmillan published IF- in July 1914 as both a leaflet and a pamphlet bound in card stock of various shades of gray or brown measuring 16.2 x 11.4 cm lettered and ruled in deep purplish-red. In this pamphlet issue the front cover served as the title page and the text was printed on both sides of two paginated leaves with COPYRIGHT" at the foot of p.4 and advertisements for Kiplings works on the recto and verso of the back cover. Kiplings bibliographer notes three printings of this pamphlet issue the second in September 1914 and third in August 1915 noting that for later issues the year at the bottom of the front cover changes. Although the poem was not collected and published until 1910 inspiration for the poem occurred 15 years earlier in the person of Leander Starr Jameson 1853-1917 leader of the failed Jameson Raid of that year against the Boer Republic of Transvaal that helped precipitate the Second Anglo-Boer War. Despite the fiasco much of the British public treated Jameson as a dashing hero Kipling admired him greatly and in his autobiography Something of Myself Kipling said that "If" was drawn from Jameson's character. The character flaws of the poems muse are an irony. The poems association with the collective anonymized slaughter of the First World War is another. It seems hardly coincidental that this first separate British edition was issued during the first month of the First World War. Indeed a later 1916 edition of the poem was produced in an edition of 30000 as a Xmas and New Year card from the Ladies Buffet staff to the soldiers embarking for the front through Waterloo Station; Kipling waived his royalty cutting the reprint cost. The poems enshrinement of firmness of character and temperament in the face of adversity became inextricably linked to the patriotic offering and sacrifice of so many British sons to the inglorious trenches of the First World War. The association was undoubtedly difficult for Kipling. Fourteen months after this copy of IF- was published Kipling lost his own and only son to the war. John Kipling who had been commissioned in the Irish Guards at the outset of the war had gone to France in August 1915; in September a month after his eighteenth birthday he was reported wounded and missing in the battle of Loos. His body was never found in Kipling's lifetime: the grave was identified in 1992. John's death coincided with the onset of Kipling's suffering from the undiagnosed duodenal ulcer that tormented the last twenty years of his life and that at last killed him. None of the ironies attendant to the poems inspiration and application diminish its beautifully lyrical and enduringly compelling exhortations. An exceptional set of these classic children's books. The Jungle Book is a collection of fables which provide moral instruction by using animals anthropomorphically. Each story begins and ends with a verse and the original publications contain some illustrations created by Rudyard's father John Lockwood Kipling. The inspiration for the book is evident. Kipling was born in India and he spent his childhood there. Interestingly Kipling wrote these stories when he lived in Vermont. The Jungle Book is used to develop the morale of the junior element of the Scouting movement "The Cub Scouts". The name of the head wolf "Akela" has been traditionally given to each Cub Scout pack leader. At least fifteen movies were released based on Kipling's stories beginning with Elephant Boy in 1937. A live-action anticipated version of Jungle Book will be released in October of 2018 by Warner Brothers. Macmillan hardcover books
1938rif. CNSZ08London: Macmillan and Co. Limited 1938. Hardcover. Very good. Volumes I through XXVI and Volume XXVIII quarto size approx. 6650 total pages signed by Rudyard Kipling in Volume I. Rudyard Kipling 1865-1936 is perhaps best known today for "The Jungle Book" however he was prolific with a list almost too long to count of novels short stories poems and travel literature. In 1907 at the age of 41 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature the first English language writer to receive the award and the youngest recipient to date n.b. above information from Wiki. This set of his works "The Bombay Edition" has Kipling's signature in the first volume and is printed on paper especially made for the edition bearing the watermark "R elephant-headed Ganesha with swastika and lotus K". Note: for those who may not be aware of this the swastika was originally used as a symbol of many types of good wishes: health luck success etc.; it's usage goes back as far as the 4th century BCE - or perhaps even earlier. It is in use in many Eastern religions even today as a symbol of divinity - it was in all of these positive aspects that Kipling used the symbol. It wasn't until the appropriation of the symbol by the Nazi party in the early 20th century that it came to mean to many in Western and European cultures a symbol of hatred and anti-Semitism. The first twenty-five volumes issued in an edition of 1050 copies the first eight volumes in 1913 volumes nine through twenty-two in 1914 volume twenty-three in 1915 volume twenty-four in 1917 and volume twenty-five in 1919. It was not until 1927 that volume twenty-six was published obviously due to the Great War and the final five volumes being issued in 1938 these final volumes issued in an edition of only 500 copies. This has had the result that many available sets do not contain the later volumes. This set consists of volumes one through twenty-six consecutively with the addition of volume twenty-eight. ___DESCRIPTION: Each volume bound in half natural linen over blue paper-covered boards paper spine labels top edges gilt fore- and bottom edges uncut volumes one through twenty-five with the Ex-Libris of Albert Julian Pell on the front pastedown see Provenance below Kipling's signature in black ink on the edition fore-title each volume with the volume title page in blue and black each story with a blue initial capital each volume with a colophon with a Kipling's device in blue most but not all volumes with spare spine labels tipped in at the rear flyleaf; bindings are quarto size 9 7/8" by 6 3/4" pagination ranges from 135 to 357 pp.; note that the paper covering the boards on volume twenty-four does not match the other volumes it is close in colour but different in texture since the Ex-Libris matches the others in the set we surmise it was issued this way but our bibliography is silent on that issue; also note that volumes twenty-six and twenty-eight were acquired separately see notes below. ___CONDITION: The set is overall in solid very good condition; the bindings clean although the blue paper now shows offsetting from the glue a bit of very light bumping to the head and tail of the spines the spine labels all sunned and some with light wear strong square text blocks with mostly solid hinges a few tender or slightly cracked but still holding most corners lightly rubbed a few board edges lightly dinged the interiors mostly clean and bright a few pages with light foxing and other than the Ex-Libris free of prior owner markings. Exceptions to this that we see include a prior bookseller pencilled marking above the Ex-Libris in volume one the bottom front corner of volume seven appears to have been bent at some point both hinges in volume thirteen were repaired at some point with what appears to be archival paper but we cannot be certain volume twenty-four with a dark stain on the upper portion of the spine whatever caused that did not penetrate into the book as the interior is fine and there is also a small light stain on the front board volume twenty-five with a light scratch on the front board volume twenty-six has the note from Robert Kirkman to Serendipity books see Provenance below loosely laid in and in addition to overall soil there is some damage to the fore-edge of the front board and the first few leaves along with some short pencilled notes on the front and rear pastedowns; volume twenty-eight is ex-library with the library stamp on the spine near the tail as well as library markings to the front pastedown including the residue of the removal of the library pocket the binding somewhat shaken and a few gutters lightly cracked. ___PROVENANCE: Volumes one through twenty-five with the armorial Ex-Libris of Albert Julian Pell 1863-1916 with the motto "mente manuque" "With mind and hand".
