1894ref. 149681London: Macmillan 1894-95. First editions of both volumes of The Jungle Book. Octavo two volumes original blue cloth decorated and lettered in gilt all edges gilt engraved tissue-guarded frontispiece illustrated by J. L. Kipling W.H. Drake and P. Frenzeny. In near fine condition with light rubbing to the extremities. Near ownership inscriptions. An exceptional example. The Jungle Book is a collection of fables which provide moral instruction by using animals anthropomorphically. Each story begins and ends with a verse and the original publications contain some illustrations created by Rudyard's father John Lockwood Kipling. The inspiration for the book is evident. Kipling was born in India and he spent his childhood there. Interestingly Kipling wrote these stories when he lived in Vermont. The Jungle Book is used to develop the morale of the junior element of the Scouting movement "The Cub Scouts". The name of the head wolf "Akela" has been traditionally given to each Cub Scout pack leader. At least fifteen movies were released based on Kipling's stories beginning with Elephant Boy in 1937. A live-action anticipated version of Jungle Book will be released in October of 2018 by Warner Brothers. Macmillan hardcover

ref. 06177Lahore : The Civil and Military Gazette Press 1886. First Edition of Kipling's First Published Book - Departmental Ditties KIPLING Rudyard. Departmental Ditties and Other Verses. Lahore: The Civil and Military Gazette Press 1886. First edition of Kipling's first published book. Narrow octavo 10 3/4 x 4 1/4 inches; 273 x 107 mm. Twenty-nine unnumbered leaves. Publisher's tan printed wrappers stapled as issued and imitating the form of an Indian civil service envelope complete with overlapping flap. There is an ink inscription at the bottom of the front wrapper "E.R.P to M.C.P." Light soiling to wrappers edge of front wrapper and flap with some light wear. The pink ribbon that originally passed through the slit on the flap is now lacking the flap itself and its very vulnerable hinge to the overlapping flap is unrestored and intact. Bookplate of Roger H. West and old booksellers description pasted onto blank verso of penultimate verse Giffen's Debt. Over-opened between penultimate and last leaf. Contained in a red cloth chemise which in turn is housed in a full red morocco slipcase smooth spine lettered in gilt. Aside from the aforementioned minor flaws this is still an exceptionally good unrestored copy. First edition of Kipling's debut published work. His previous writings had either been privately printed issued as offprints or included in collaborative books. At the time Kipling was serving as sub-editor of the Civil and Military Gazette an English-language newspaper based in Lahore that covered the lives of the Civil Service and the Indian Army in Punjab. His position combined with his family's social standing afforded him numerous opportunities to observe and explore the full spectrum of life in India. From an early age Kipling had been captivated by the vibrant and diverse world of native India and his keen observational skills allowed him to vividly capture its essence. As his engagement with journalism deepened he frequently filled the newspaper's pages with prose sketches and light verse. Eventually he began inserting his own poems under the title Departmental Ditties into the newspaper culminating in the publication of this edition designed to resemble a bundle of civil service memoranda. 1894ref. 188654London: Macmillan and Co. 1894. Original Jean Jullien dust jacket First edition in book form the "First Editions: Re-covered" copy. This copy includes a unique dust jacket by Jean Jullien. The acrylic gouache painting on two sides of acetate shows Mowgli Baloo and Bagheera peering through an opening in the forest. The acetate allows their view to be the original pictorial design of elephants on the front cover of the binding. A charity auction to benefit the House of Illustration was held on 11 December 2017. Book illustrators fashion artists painters and artists were asked to choose a book which appealed to them. A first edition was then obtained and the artist provided a unique dust jacket. With reference to his choice of book Jullien stated that "I grew up watching and loving the Disney version and am always interested in revisiting popular culture landmarks. I find that their endurance to time and iteration is a tribute to their efficiency and quality". The charity's concept for artists to engage with a first edition is particularly effective here as the original binding plays a new illustrative role with Jullien's dust jacket.
