1895réf. 3200London: Macmillan 1895. First editions. Near Fine. Original publisher's cloth bindings with gilt to spines and boards. All edges brightly gilt. Gentle bumping to extremities. Spine of The Jungle Book the slightest bit rolled. Small cloth repair near the crown of spine on The Second Jungle Book. Dark green endpapers. Internally both copies bright and clean with just a bit of scattered foxing to the second. An attractive pair of Kipling's most memorable works. Based on folk tales and legends that Kipling learned during his childhood in India but written while in Vermont. This work of several inter-related short stories met with huge success upon publication and continues to enthrall readers of all ages to this day. According to Professor Edwin L. Miller their publication "caused even severe critics of Kipling's previous work to admit that he is a writer of inspired genius." Largely focused on man's relationship to nature The Jungle Books in part narrate the tales of Mowgli a human man-cub raised by wolves as he tries to find his proper place in the world. As he struggles with his own identity he finds allies and adversaries among the animal communities through which he travels. They also include the story of Rikki-Tikki-Tavi the heroic mongoose who would later inspire an animated short voiced by Orson Welles. For contributions like these Kipling became the first English-language writer and the youngest ever to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature. Near Fine. Macmillan unknown books

1886réf. 540FIRST EDITION tall narrow 4to half red morocco over marbled boards original light brown printed wrappers that double as an Indian civil service envelope preserved marbled endpapers bookplates of William Garth and William Marchbank Lahore the Civil and Military Press 1886. The First Edition of Kipling's first published work. Previous work was either printed privately offprints or collaborative books. Kipling was sub-editor of the Civil and Military Gazette an Anglophone newspaper reporting from Lahore on the life of the Civil Service and the Indian Army in Punjab. Thanks to his occupation and his family's social standing he had many opportunities to explore the full range of life in India. He remained keenly observant of the thronging spectacle of native India which had engaged his interest and affection from earliest childhood. He was quickly filling the journals he worked for with prose sketches and light verse. Kipling began inserting his own poems under the heading of Departmental Ditties into the newspaper and then produced this edition made up to look like a bundle of civil service memoranda. Original autograph letter signed by the author Rudyard Kipling on printed stationery from Rock House Maidencombe St. Marychurch where he and his wife lived between 1896 and 1898. The letter reads in full: “Dear Watson Many thanks for your note and the contract which certainly opens a new and safe method of burglary. I always said that the Oriental thief can give his white brothers many points in the game. The necklace he chose was amethyst & pearl - not emerald & pearl - and it is a beauty. I should very much like to be able to afford a white pearl necklace. Do you suppose the price would be very heavy I should like to have an idea on this subject. 1894réf. 120935London: Macmillan 1894-95. First editions of both volumes of The Jungle Book. Octavo two volumes original blue cloth decorated and lettered in gilt all edges gilt engraved frontispiece with tissue guard present. Illustrated by J. L. Kipling W.H. Drake and P. Frenzeny. In very good condition. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. The Jungle Book is a collection of fables which provide moral instruction by using animals anthropomorphically. Each story begins and ends with a verse and the original publications contain some illustrations created by Rudyard's father John Lockwood Kipling. The inspiration for the book is evident. Kipling was born in India and he spent his childhood there. Interestingly Kipling wrote these stories when he lived in Vermont. The Jungle Book is used to develop the morale of the junior element of the Scouting movement "The Cub Scouts". The name of the head wolf "Akela" has been traditionally given to each Cub Scout pack leader. At least fifteen movies were released based on Kipling's stories beginning with Elephant Boy in 1937. A live-action anticipated version of Jungle Book will be released in October of 2018 by Warner Brothers. Macmillan hardcover books

1919réf. 149313London: His Majesty's Stationery Office 1919. Exceptionally rare first edition of this pamphlet honoring every British soldier who died in World War I. Oblong octavo original publisher's pictorial wrappers illustrated with black and white drawings of the cemeteries and memorials as they will appear completed throughout. In near fine condition. Illustrated by Mr. Douglas Macpherson. Housed in a custom red portfolio with gilt titles to the front panel and string ties. Rudyard Kipling’s The Graves of the Fallen 1919 written for the Imperial War Graves Commission articulates the moral and aesthetic vision behind the design and commemoration of British and Commonwealth soldiers’ graves after World War I. Serving as the Commission’s literary adviser Kipling helped shape its guiding principles of equality in death—ensuring that all soldiers regardless of rank or class were memorialized with identical headstones and inscriptions. The text blends solemn prose with restrained idealism reflecting both personal grief—Kipling’s son was killed in the war—and a collective commitment to remembrance. Lacks Part One of “From Sea to Sea” Volume XV otherwise a very fine set text and plates are clean and crisp and bound in handsome period binding. . Edition: New York Binding: Original publisher’s black ½ morocco with light blue marble boards spine in six compartments of raised bands and gilt floral motifs gilt text in two and three top edges gilt edges uncut occasionally unopened endpapers marbled. Notes: The later volumes vols XXVI XXVII & XXVIII are published in purple and dark blue boards. The “Outward Bound” edition was published in installments between 1897 until the end of Kipling’s life in 1936. The complete set eventually included 36 volumes; however variations appeared in the printing over the years. Text published in two volumes in earlier printings was combined into single volumes to save money on the part of the publishers. The published letters of Rudyard Kipling 2004 indicate that Kipling often disapproved of the cost-saving measures of Scribner’s preferring that later printings kept the same numeration of the volumes as the earlier ones.
