1919rif. 149313London: His Majesty's Stationery Office 1919. Exceptionally rare first edition of this pamphlet honoring every British soldier who died in World War I. Oblong octavo original publisher's pictorial wrappers illustrated with black and white drawings of the cemeteries and memorials as they will appear completed throughout. In near fine condition. Illustrated by Mr. Douglas Macpherson. Housed in a custom red portfolio with gilt titles to the front panel and string ties. Rudyard Kipling’s The Graves of the Fallen 1919 written for the Imperial War Graves Commission articulates the moral and aesthetic vision behind the design and commemoration of British and Commonwealth soldiers’ graves after World War I. Serving as the Commission’s literary adviser Kipling helped shape its guiding principles of equality in death—ensuring that all soldiers regardless of rank or class were memorialized with identical headstones and inscriptions. The text blends solemn prose with restrained idealism reflecting both personal grief—Kipling’s son was killed in the war—and a collective commitment to remembrance. rif. 149559Rare pamphlet of Kipling's humorous and ironic poem. Duodecimo original wrappers frontispiece of Kipling pictorial initials six pages. In very good condition. Rare with none appearing at auction in the last 100 years. Rudyard Kipling’s poem “The Betrothed” 1886 first published in Departmental Ditties and Other Verses exemplifies his early mastery of wit irony and social observation. Written during his years in British India the poem humorously explores masculine indulgence and moral choice through the narrator’s mock-serious decision to favor cigars over marriage parodying Victorian ideals of romance and respectability. Beneath its comic tone “The Betrothed” reveals Kipling’s emerging interest in the conflicts between personal pleasure social convention and the disciplined self—a tension that would later define his broader literary treatment of duty and individualism. unknown

Quarto original wrappers six pages with two pages of facsimile stanzas cover portrait of Kipling by John Collier. Printed as a single folded sheet forming six printed pages in triptych format. The souvenir marked the 100th performance of Sydney Grundy's The Degenerates at the Garrick Theatre on Friday 24th October 1899 when Lillie Langtry who was playing Mrs. Trevelyan in the production recited Kipling's poem The Absent-Minded Beggar from the stage after the final curtain. Rudyard Kipling’s The Absent-Minded Beggar first published at the outbreak of the Second Boer War 1899–1902 is a notable example of patriotic literature mobilized for imperial causes. Written to rally support for British troops and their families the poem was quickly transformed into a piece of popular ephemera with the first illustrated edition marketed through The Daily Mail as part of a charitable appeal. The publication’s sales generated significant funds for the reservists’ families illustrating how literature journalism and philanthropy intersected within the culture of British imperialism. A quality collection of short stories including the remarkable 'Mrs. Bathurst' with its theme of destructive power and obsessive love plus the strange tale 'Wireless' which concerns spirit possession as well as the classic ghost story 'They'; an unsettling tale about a lost motorist and his encounter with a blind woman at the isolated 'House Beautiful' being a companion rather than a sequel to the earlier 'Brushwood Boy' fantasy which sees the reappearance of the characters 'Them'. Adept at short fiction Kipling penned many 'uncanny tales' some being subtle fantasies They The Brushwood Boy The Eye of Allah whilst others were more overtly supernatural or scientific romances in the manner of Edgar Allan Poe The Phantom 'Rickshaw The Mark of the Beast The Night Mail. Kipling wrote of new inventions and future wars warned of the social consequences of technological change and exerted an the most lasting influence on modern science fiction and fantasy writing according to leading SF writer Poul Anderson; indeed his stories of India with notions of an earthly alien in a strange world are the most salient predecessors of golden age sci-fi. Kipling later stressed he was 'not diving after physical experiences' although he was exposed to and described uncanny events and was much aware of the irrational premises and feelings of others; his formative professional years were spent in India a country with a widespread belief in ghosts and spirit reincarnation and at a time when matters 'psychic' were fashionable throughout Europe.
