1930ref. 158381930. Garden City NY: Doubleday Doran & Company 1930. Original light yellow wrappers lettered in green. First Edition of this short story being the American copyright issue -- 75 copies printed and privately distributed in August 1930 in order to secure copyright protection in America. The main story is the voyage generally reckoned to have taken place in or shortly after 60 AD during which St. Paul was shipwrecked on the island of Malta then called Melita -- the account of which given in Acts 27-28 has been said to be the most vivid account of a voyage and shipwreck in the whole of Greek and Latin literature. In Kipling's story that voyage is described in the conversation of three reminiscing seamen whose meeting provides a typically Kiplingesque "frame" for the main story kipling.org. This tale then appeared in the September issue of London Magazine and was subsequently collected in 1932 in LIMITS AND RENEWALS the last collection published during Kipling's life. A fine copy. Richards A389; Stewart 592. Housed in a morocco-backed slipcase with inner chemise. unknown books
1895ref. 159041895. Kipling J. Lockwood. With Illustrations by J. Lockwood Kipling C.I.E. London: Macmillan and Co. 1895. 2 pp undated ads. Original blue cloth pictorially decorated in gilt all page edges gilt. First English Edition published three days after the American of the sequel to THE JUNGLE BOOK which had been published the year before. It continues with more tales of Mowgli that exemplify "The Laws of the Jungle" -- with illustrations by John Lockwood Kipling Rudyard's father. This was the second of the four Kipling gift books bound similarly by Macmillan with SOLDIER TALES and CAPTAINS COURAGEOUS coming out the following two years respectively. This is an attractive copy very good-plus or possibly near-fine volume slightly askew as usual very light wear at the extremities; atypically other than the endpapers there is no foxing on the leaves within. Richards A85; Stewart 132. unknown books
1891ref. 157181891. Hugh Walpole's copy Allahabad: A.H. Wheeler & Co. 1891. 4 pp preliminary plus 9 pp terminal ads undated with prices in rupees. Original grey-green pictorial wrappers First Published Edition technically the second Indian edition following the suppressed 1890 edition which had considerably different contents and of which only six copies are known. This 1891-dated Allahabad edition printed there came next followed by the 1891 edition with joint Allahabad / London imprint the first English edition printed in the UK. This was issued as No. XIV in the "Indian Railway Library" -- though Wheeler published this THE SMITH ADMINISTRATION and LETTERS OF MARQUE without authority after Kipling had left India for England. As is typical for this volume that is extremely fragile more delicate than the authorized titles condition is good-to-very good -- with about half of the wrapper's spine perished and with chips at some corners. Livingston says of this edition "although it is very scarce copies can be found." Richards A52 mistakenly showing this edition as undated; Stewart 93; Martindell 42; Livingston 70. Housed in a cloth clamshell case. Provenance: 1 there is an indecipherable signature with the date 1891 written across the front cover; 2 at the top of the title page is the signature of Hugh Walpole 1884-1941 the English novelist born in New Zealand; he also added his "Brackenburn" leather bookplate to the inside of the front wrapper. The interior of the clamshell case bears the label of W. & G. Foyle Ltd of Charing Cross Road. unknown books
