Complete with twenty-two plates and text illustrations throughout. Spine in compartments with raised bands and elephant motif. All edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. Original cloth cover bound in at rear. A very attractive example clean and bright throughout in a charming binding. A classic work of children's literature and one of Kipling's most beloved titles Just So Stories compiles origin tales like "How the Leopard Got its Spots" and "How the Elephant Got his Trunk" and "How the Camel Got His Hump." The book was charmingly illustrated by Kipling himself who reported that the stories were born of out the bedtime tales that he told his daughter. Kipling is of course best known for The Jungle Book and its sequel which earned him the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1907 and secured his place in the canon of English storytelling. Based on folktales and legends that Kipling learned during his childhood in India the Jungle Books were met with huge success upon publication and continue to enthrall readers of all ages to this day. According to Professor Edwin L. Miller their publication "caused even severe critics of Kipling's previous work to admit that he is a writer of inspired genius." Largely focused on man's relationship to nature the Jungle Books in part narrate the tales of Mowgli a human "man-cub" raised by wolves as he tries to find his proper place in the world. For contributions like these Kipling became the first English-language writer and the youngest ever to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature. Fine. Macmillan and Co., Limited unknown books
1899Best.-Nr. 90256London: Daily Mail 1899. Quarto printed on white satin. Oblong folio in triptych form opening to six panels with portrait of Kipling to cover reproduction of a sketch by R. A beautifully-preserved example a trifle aged at margins but free of perforations or loss; Very Good to Near Fine. A fundraising souvenir one of several versions of this text produced to benefit families of British soldiers in the Boer War. Copies printed on satin were hawked by programme girls throughout the theatres of London for the princely sum of One Guinea. Ours is the special issue noted by Richards produced for the actress Lilly Langtry and offered for sale at the Garrick Theatre on Nov. 24 1899. The rear panel bears the printed legend: "Presented by Mrs. Lilly Langtry on the occasion of the 100th performance of the "Degenerates" at the Garrick Theatre." 1909Best.-Nr. 90334New York: Doubleday Page & Company 1909. First American Edition. Octavo. 19.5cm. Publisher's deep blue cloth lavishly decorated in gilt and silver to spine and front board. 77pp. printed rectos only; 16pp. fictional advertisments to rear. Bright and straight with some light scuffing to spine ends and extremities a little darkened to the spine; internally clean and fresh color pictorial endpapers by Leyendecker color frontispiece with tissue guard color plates. A very good copy of a pretty book. A most unusual bit of Kipling in the shape of a fantastic vision of the future in which the majority of air travel is via dirigible public industrial or private and which takes the form of a journalistic account of the aerial mail service for some future magazine or other a little optimistic of Kipling to assume we would have journalism in the 21st century. This heady and dramatic vision of the year 2000 is embellished with a selection of advertisments and blurbs for private airships dirigible engineering equipment and classified ads looking for pilots "Must be a member of the Church of England." in a pseudo-documentary transmedial fashion. The end result is an entertaining and deeply unserious bit of speculative fiction. Doubleday, Page & Company unknown books
1937Best.-Nr. 7813London: The Macmillan Co 1937. The Sussex Edition. Very Good . One of 575 numbered sets signed by the author in the first volume. Printed in Edinburgh by R&R Clark Ltd. on handmade paper. The Sussex Edition which has become the most desirable collected edition of Kipling's works was edited by Kipling himself and including two volumes of previously uncollected prose. The edition published the year after Kipling's death was intended as a complete retrospective on Kipling's career and the definitive edition of his works. The superbly produced set of course includes Kipling's most lauded fiction - The Jungle Book Kim and Just So Stories - as well as his poems and nonfiction capturing the scope of his literary output. A contemporary review in the Times Literary Supplement lauded the production: "The publishers are justified in the use of the epithet 'superb' to describe this edition. The fine hand-made paper and Bembo type are equally satisfactory but perhaps the binding is still more notable. It is.Niger leather lettered and simply ornamented in gold. The volumes.are comparatively slim and so easy to hold; and they have an air of durability and of being meant for reading as well as for keeping which is not always the case with éditions de luxe." Very Good . The Macmillan Co unknown books
1895Best.-Nr. 7926London: Macmillan and Co 1895. First editions. Very Good Near Fine. A handsome set. Publisher's blue cloth bindings stamped in gilt. All edges gilt. Dark green endpapers. Both volumes illustrated throughout with contributions by J. L. Kipling W. H. Drake and P. Frenzeny in The Jungle Book; the author's father Lockwood Kipling C.I.E. illustrated The Second Jungle Book. This set contained in a custom blue cloth slipcase. Few books have shaped the imagination of childhood quite like Kipling's Jungle Books. First published in 1894 and 1895 these two volumes introduced the world to Mowgli Baloo Bagheera Kaa and Shere Khan. The timeless stories blended fable folklore and imperial adventure into one of the most enduring classics of English literature. The Jungle Book 1894 includes the first appearance of "Mowgli's Brothers" "Kaa's Hunting" and "Tiger! Tiger!" alongside such favorites as "Rikki-Tikki-Tavi." The Second Jungle Book 1895 continued the talesdeepening the Mowgli cycle and adding enduring pieces like "The King's Ankus" and "Red Dog." Together the two books form the complete Mowgli canon. First edition sets in original cloth are increasingly scarce especially when both volumes present well. These are the foundational works of Kipling's career - the stories that earned him the Nobel Prize in Literature 1907 and secured his place in the canon of English storytelling. As he struggles with his own identity he finds allies and adversaries among the animal communities through which he travels. They also include the story of Rikki-Tikki-Tavi the heroic mongoose who would later inspire an animated short voiced by Orson Welles. For contributions like these Kipling became the first English-language writer and the youngest ever to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature. Very Good Near Fine. Macmillan and Co unknown books
