The stories tell mostly of Mowgli an Indian boy who is raised by wolves from infancy and who learns self-sufficiency and wisdom from the jungle animals. The book describes the social life of the wolf pack and more fancifully the justice and natural order of life in the jungle. Among the animals whose tales are related in the work are Akela the wolf; Baloo the brown bear; Shere Khan the boastful Bengal tiger who is Mowgli's enemy; Kaa the python; Bagheera the panther; and Rikki-tikki-tavi the mongoose.' A classic work of children's literature and one of Kipling's most beloved titles Just So Stories compiles origin tales like "How the Leopard Got its Spots" and "How the Elephant Got his Trunk" and "How the Camel Got His Hump." The book was charmingly illustrated by Kipling himself who reported that the stories were born of out the bedtime tales that he told his daughter. Kipling is of course best known for The Jungle Book and its sequel which earned him the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1907 and secured his place in the canon of English storytelling. Based on folktales and legends that Kipling learned during his childhood in India the Jungle Books were met with huge success upon publication and continue to enthrall readers of all ages to this day. According to Professor Edwin L. Miller their publication "caused even severe critics of Kipling's previous work to admit that he is a writer of inspired genius." Largely focused on man's relationship to nature the Jungle Books in part narrate the tales of Mowgli a human "man-cub" raised by wolves as he tries to find his proper place in the world. For contributions like these Kipling became the first English-language writer and the youngest ever to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature. Fine. Macmillan and Co., Limited unknown

1894réf. 188654London: Macmillan and Co. 1894. Original Jean Jullien dust jacket First edition in book form the "First Editions: Re-covered" copy. This copy includes a unique dust jacket by Jean Jullien. The acrylic gouache painting on two sides of acetate shows Mowgli Baloo and Bagheera peering through an opening in the forest. The acetate allows their view to be the original pictorial design of elephants on the front cover of the binding. A charity auction to benefit the House of Illustration was held on 11 December 2017. Book illustrators fashion artists painters and artists were asked to choose a book which appealed to them. A first edition was then obtained and the artist provided a unique dust jacket. With reference to his choice of book Jullien stated that "I grew up watching and loving the Disney version and am always interested in revisiting popular culture landmarks. I find that their endurance to time and iteration is a tribute to their efficiency and quality". The charity's concept for artists to engage with a first edition is particularly effective here as the original binding plays a new illustrative role with Jullien's dust jacket. Jean Jullien b. 1983 is an acclaimed French graphic designer and illustrator whose work has been published by Phaidon Press. His "Peace for Paris" symbol went viral through news coverage and social media in the wake of 2015 terrorist attacks in Paris. Doubleday famously dubbed this the "Whole Damn Thing" edition bringing together as it did the full breadth of Kipling's poetry up to the point of publication. This was the first "Inclusive Edition" an idea established between Kipling and Doubleday at Brown's Hotel in February 1919. The "Inclusive Edition" was republished in expanded forms in 1926 and 1932 followed by the "Definitive Edition" 1940 after Kipling's death. 1909réf. 90334New York: Doubleday Page & Company 1909. First American Edition. Octavo. 19.5cm. Publisher's deep blue cloth lavishly decorated in gilt and silver to spine and front board. 77pp. printed rectos only; 16pp. fictional advertisments to rear. Bright and straight with some light scuffing to spine ends and extremities a little darkened to the spine; internally clean and fresh color pictorial endpapers by Leyendecker color frontispiece with tissue guard color plates. A very good copy of a pretty book. A most unusual bit of Kipling in the shape of a fantastic vision of the future in which the majority of air travel is via dirigible public industrial or private and which takes the form of a journalistic account of the aerial mail service for some future magazine or other a little optimistic of Kipling to assume we would have journalism in the 21st century. This heady and dramatic vision of the year 2000 is embellished with a selection of advertisments and blurbs for private airships dirigible engineering equipment and classified ads looking for pilots "Must be a member of the Church of England." in a pseudo-documentary transmedial fashion. The end result is an entertaining and deeply unserious bit of speculative fiction. Doubleday, Page & Company unknown
