Armorial bookplate "Think and Thank" on front pastedown. Original front and rear printed wrappers bound in. Front wrapper with design by the Mayo School of Art Lahore with early ink signature "L.C. Ibbetson" on top blank margin. This is a complete copy of the first edition first impression of a book authored by members of the Kipling family. Published in a limited run of 250 copies it was bound around the time of publication and it is particularly rare to have its original wrappers and advertisements at the end. The book marks the first appearance of The Phantom 'Rickshaw and The Strange Ride of Morrowbie Jukes C.E. Rudyard Kipling later described the origins of this work in his 1937 autobiography Something of Myself recalling that "in the cold weather of 1885 we four made up a Christmas annual which pleased us a good deal and attracted a certain amount of attention. Later much later it became a 'collector's piece' in the US book-market and to that extent smudged the memories of its birth." The collection consists of 16 pieces-eight in prose and eight in verse-written by "four Anglo-Indian writers" as stated on the title page. The authors who remained anonymous throughout were Kipling himself his father mother and sister. Kipling took the initiative to publish the book through the Civil and Military Gazette selling it by subscription. At just 19 years old he contributed half of the content using this opportunity to bring his work into print. His ghost stories gained wider recognition when they were later reprinted in The Phantom 'Rickshaw and Other Tales 1890. Kipling's father however was somewhat reluctant about the publication. He wrote to Margaret Burne-Jones expressing his hope that someone would "rap Rudyard's knuckles for the unwholesomeness of The Phantom 'Rickshaw and the coarseness of The Tragedy of Teeth." The book's binding process was notably chaotic. Kipling recalled that the work took place at night by candlelight with workers on overtime incentivized with brandy and free tobacco to keep production moving. Over forty men including binders were involved in assembling Quartette. The publication was officially announced on 19 December and its cover design is believed to have been created by Kipling's father John Lockwood Kipling who was then the first principal of the Mayo School of Art in Lahore. First edition of Kipling's very rare second book; the "two writers" of the title were Kipling and his sister Alice "Trix". Of the 39 poems mostly "echoes" or imitations of well-known poets 32 are ascribed to Kipling and 7 to his sister. First published in Lahore in August 1884 the volume appeared when Kipling then 18 years old had been living in India for nearly two years. It was printed by the Civil and Military Gazette Press where Kipling served as sub-editor and he personally oversaw its production. In December 1883 Kipling's mother brought his 15-year-old sister Trix from England to join him. Together they engaged in a series of literary experiments and playful compositions producing a substantial collection of poems-primarily parodies of well-known poets-by the spring of 1884. Encouraged by their efforts Rudyard published a selection of these works in August of that year under the title Echoes by Two Writers. The Poems: Echoes: Introduction 1. réf. 06177Lahore : The Civil and Military Gazette Press 1886. First Edition of Kipling's First Published Book - Departmental Ditties KIPLING Rudyard. Departmental Ditties and Other Verses. Lahore: The Civil and Military Gazette Press 1886. First edition of Kipling's first published book. Narrow octavo 10 3/4 x 4 1/4 inches; 273 x 107 mm. Twenty-nine unnumbered leaves. Publisher's tan printed wrappers stapled as issued and imitating the form of an Indian civil service envelope complete with overlapping flap. There is an ink inscription at the bottom of the front wrapper "E.R.P to M.C.P." Light soiling to wrappers edge of front wrapper and flap with some light wear. The pink ribbon that originally passed through the slit on the flap is now lacking the flap itself and its very vulnerable hinge to the overlapping flap is unrestored and intact. Bookplate of Roger H. West and old booksellers description pasted onto blank verso of penultimate verse Giffen's Debt. Over-opened between penultimate and last leaf. Contained in a red cloth chemise which in turn is housed in a full red morocco slipcase smooth spine lettered in gilt. Aside from the aforementioned minor flaws this is still an exceptionally good unrestored copy. First edition of Kipling's debut published work. His previous writings had either been privately printed issued as offprints or included in collaborative books. At the time Kipling was serving as sub-editor of the Civil and Military Gazette an English-language newspaper based in Lahore that covered the lives of the Civil Service and the Indian Army in Punjab. His position combined with his family's social standing afforded him numerous opportunities to observe and explore the full spectrum of life in India. From an early age Kipling had been captivated by the vibrant and diverse world of native India and his keen observational skills allowed him to vividly capture its essence. As his engagement with journalism deepened he frequently filled the newspaper's pages with prose sketches and light verse. Eventually he began inserting his own poems under the title Departmental Ditties into the newspaper culminating in the publication of this edition designed to resemble a bundle of civil service memoranda. réf. 00136London: Macmillan and Co. 1903. The Songs from Rudyard Kipling's "Just So Stories" KIPLING Rudyard. The Just So Song Book. Being the Songs from Rudyard Kipling's Just So Stories. Set to Music by Edward German. London: Macmillan and Co. 1903. First edition. Large quarto 12 1/4 x 9 3/4 inches; 311 x246 mm. 2 62 pp. Music. Original dark red cloth pictorially stamped in black on front cover and lettered in gilt on front cover and spine. Small area of slight discoloration on back cover. Front hinge hints at starting. Title tissue guard slightly browned and with a short tear at lower margin. Otherwise a fine copy. A charming and scarce musical companion to Rudyard Kipling's Just So Stories issued at the height of his popularity and designed for domestic performance. Edward German's settings - by turns playful lyrical and theatrically assured -translate Kipling's rhythmic verse into songs intended for both children and adults reflecting the Edwardian taste for cultivated family entertainment. Books combining Kipling's texts with original musical settings were produced in relatively small numbers and were often heavily used making clean copies increasingly difficult to find. This first edition of The Just So Song Book survives as an appealing example of early twentieth-century literary music publishing and an important adjunct to Kipling's most beloved work. "The texts of the twelve poems contained in the Just So Stories 1902 are here set to music by Edward German. The last song 'Rolling down to Rio' is substituted for 'I've never sailed the Amazon' which is here omitted" Stewart. Livingston 270 describing the first American edition. Stewart 269-A.
