1894réf. 149681London: Macmillan 1894-95. First editions of both volumes of The Jungle Book. Octavo two volumes original blue cloth decorated and lettered in gilt all edges gilt engraved tissue-guarded frontispiece illustrated by J. L. Kipling W.H. Drake and P. Frenzeny. In near fine condition with light rubbing to the extremities. Near ownership inscriptions. An exceptional example. The Jungle Book is a collection of fables which provide moral instruction by using animals anthropomorphically. Each story begins and ends with a verse and the original publications contain some illustrations created by Rudyard's father John Lockwood Kipling. The inspiration for the book is evident. Kipling was born in India and he spent his childhood there. Interestingly Kipling wrote these stories when he lived in Vermont. The Jungle Book is used to develop the morale of the junior element of the Scouting movement "The Cub Scouts". The name of the head wolf "Akela" has been traditionally given to each Cub Scout pack leader. At least fifteen movies were released based on Kipling's stories beginning with Elephant Boy in 1937. A live-action anticipated version of Jungle Book will be released in October of 2018 by Warner Brothers. Macmillan hardcover
1903réf. 148872London: Methuen and Co 1903. Finely bound edition of Kipling's notable poetry collection. Duodecimo bound in three-quarters morocco with gilt titles and pictorial tooling to the spine in six compartments within raised gilt bands all edges gilt marbled endpapers title page vignette. In very good condition inscription to the second free endpaper. First published in 1903 Kipling's The Five Nations included a number of new poems as well as several that had been previously published notably Recessional of 1897. In 1903 the United Kingdom consisted of four nations: England Ireland Scotland and Wales. It was soon suggested that Kipling's "five nations" were the "five free nations of Canada Australia New Zealand South Africa i.e. Cape Colony and 'the islands of the sea' i.e. the British Isles" - all dominated by Britons; and except in the last case by recent settlers. That suggestion was endorsed some one hundred years later. Methuen and Co unknown

Octavo bound in full leather with gilt titles and tooling to the spine in six compartments within raised gilt bands gilt turn-ins and inner dentelles marbled endpapers all edges gilt. Illustrated by J. Lockwood Kipling C.I.E. and W.H. Drake. In near fine condition. An exceptional presentation. Kipling's Jungle Books center on the story of Mowgli an orphaned 'man-cub' who is raised in the jungle of India by wolves where he comes to learn the Laws of the Jungle. A major theme throughout the books is abandonment followed by fostering as in the life of Mowgli echoing Kipling's own childhood. Another is law vs. freedom; the stories are not about animal behavior but about human archetypes in animal form. The books remain popular to this day and have been adapted several times for film and other media including the classic Walt Disney 1967 animation and its 2016 remake. Macmillan hardcover

'The Phantom Rickshaw' is a classic of 'the psychopathic state' and this tale along with 'The Strange Ride of Morrowbie Jukes' originally titled 'The Village of the Dead' have been likened in manner to the weird tales of Edgar Allan Poe successfully re-created in a Simla rather than Gothic setting. This collection also includes the classic adventure 'The Man Who Would Be King' often cited as the best of the stories Kipling wrote in India or further as Kipling's masterpiece. 'In Black and White''s 'The Sending of Dana Da' is a 'miracle' tale being the first of Kipling's several short stories to use the elements of the supernatural and the psychic which was inspired by Madame Blavatsky and her 'occult phenomena'.
