The Sussex Edition which has become the most desirable collected edition of Kipling's works was edited by Kipling himself and including two volumes of previously uncollected prose. The edition published the year after Kipling's death was intended as a complete retrospective on Kipling's career and the definitive edition of his works. The superbly produced set of course includes Kipling's most lauded fiction - The Jungle Book Kim and Just So Stories - as well as his poems and nonfiction capturing the scope of his literary output. A contemporary review in the Times Literary Supplement lauded the production: "The publishers are justified in the use of the epithet 'superb' to describe this edition. The fine hand-made paper and Bembo type are equally satisfactory but perhaps the binding is still more notable. It is.Niger leather lettered and simply ornamented in gold. The volumes.are comparatively slim and so easy to hold; and they have an air of durability and of being meant for reading as well as for keeping which is not always the case with éditions de luxe." 1895réf. 7926London: Macmillan and Co 1895. First editions. Very Good Near Fine. A handsome set. Publisher's blue cloth bindings stamped in gilt. All edges gilt. Dark green endpapers. Both volumes illustrated throughout with contributions by J. L. Kipling W. H. Drake and P. Frenzeny in The Jungle Book; the author's father Lockwood Kipling C.I.E. illustrated The Second Jungle Book. This set contained in a custom blue cloth slipcase. Few books have shaped the imagination of childhood quite like Kipling's Jungle Books. First published in 1894 and 1895 these two volumes introduced the world to Mowgli Baloo Bagheera Kaa and Shere Khan. The timeless stories blended fable folklore and imperial adventure into one of the most enduring classics of English literature. The Jungle Book 1894 includes the first appearance of "Mowgli's Brothers" "Kaa's Hunting" and "Tiger! Tiger!" alongside such favorites as "Rikki-Tikki-Tavi." The Second Jungle Book 1895 continued the talesdeepening the Mowgli cycle and adding enduring pieces like "The King's Ankus" and "Red Dog." Together the two books form the complete Mowgli canon. First edition sets in original cloth are increasingly scarce especially when both volumes present well. These are the foundational works of Kipling's career - the stories that earned him the Nobel Prize in Literature 1907 and secured his place in the canon of English storytelling. Based on folktales and legends that Kipling learned during his childhood in India the Jungle Books were met with huge success upon publication and continue to enthrall readers of all ages to this day. According to Professor Edwin L. Miller their publication "caused even severe critics of Kipling's previous work to admit that he is a writer of inspired genius." Largely focused on man's relationship to nature the Jungle Books in part narrate the tales of Mowgli a human "man-cub" raised by wolves as he tries to find his proper place in the world. As he struggles with his own identity he finds allies and adversaries among the animal communities through which he travels. They also include the story of Rikki-Tikki-Tavi the heroic mongoose who would later inspire an animated short voiced by Orson Welles. For contributions like these Kipling became the first English-language writer and the youngest ever to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature. Very Good Near Fine. Macmillan and Co unknown

A lovely copy in the exceptionally rare dust-jacket which unusually for the period reproduces an image different from that of the blocking on the boards. With a contemporary gift inscription to the front flyleaf: 'Alice M. L. Russell / from / John S. Russell / October 1902'. Followed by another endearing inscription presumably from the mother of the recipient to the front panel of the dust-jacket: 'This is the first edition of / Just So Stories / Dad went to great trouble to get it / therefore keep carefully'. Kipling's famous stories include: How the Whale Got His Throat How the Camel Got His Hump How the Rhinoceros Got His Skin How the Leopard Got His Spots The Elephant's Child The Sing-Song of Old Man Kangaroo The Beginning of the Armadilloes How the First Letter Was Written How the Alphabet Was Made The Crab that Played with the Sea The Cat that Walked by Himself and The Butterfly that Stamped. The Chinese white pigment commonly used for the decorative blocking on the first issue binding famously tended to flake off and a new ink was used for the more commonly encountered second issue. Octavo two volumes original blue cloth decorated and lettered in gilt all edges gilt engraved tissue-guarded frontispiece illustrated by J. L. Kipling W.H. Drake and P. Frenzeny. In near fine condition with light rubbing to the extremities. Near ownership inscriptions. An exceptional example. The Jungle Book is a collection of fables which provide moral instruction by using animals anthropomorphically. Each story begins and ends with a verse and the original publications contain some illustrations created by Rudyard's father John Lockwood Kipling. The inspiration for the book is evident. Kipling was born in India and he spent his childhood there. Interestingly Kipling wrote these stories when he lived in Vermont. The Jungle Book is used to develop the morale of the junior element of the Scouting movement "The Cub Scouts". The name of the head wolf "Akela" has been traditionally given to each Cub Scout pack leader. At least fifteen movies were released based on Kipling's stories beginning with Elephant Boy in 1937. A live-action anticipated version of Jungle Book will be released in October of 2018 by Warner Brothers. Macmillan hardcover
1903réf. 148872London: Methuen and Co 1903. Finely bound edition of Kipling's notable poetry collection. Duodecimo bound in three-quarters morocco with gilt titles and pictorial tooling to the spine in six compartments within raised gilt bands all edges gilt marbled endpapers title page vignette. In very good condition inscription to the second free endpaper. First published in 1903 Kipling's The Five Nations included a number of new poems as well as several that had been previously published notably Recessional of 1897. In 1903 the United Kingdom consisted of four nations: England Ireland Scotland and Wales. It was soon suggested that Kipling's "five nations" were the "five free nations of Canada Australia New Zealand South Africa i.e. Cape Colony and 'the islands of the sea' i.e. the British Isles" - all dominated by Britons; and except in the last case by recent settlers. That suggestion was endorsed some one hundred years later. Methuen and Co unknown

1899réf. 149009England and The United States: The Daily Mail Publishing Co 1899. First illustrated facsimile edition of Kipling's poem The Absent-Minded Beggar a souvenir specially printed by The Daily Mail. Quarto silk moire wrappers six pages tissue-guarded frontispiece with tissue-guards between the two pages of facsimile stanzas cover portrait of Kipling by John Collier. Originally printed as a single folded sheet forming six printed pages in triptych format. The souvenir marked the 100th performance of Sydney Grundy's The Degenerates at the Garrick Theatre on Friday 24th October 1899 when Lillie Langtry who was playing Mrs. Trevelyan in the production recited Kipling's poem The Absent-Minded Beggar from the stage after the final curtain. The proceeds of the sale of the poem benefited the wives and children of the reservists. In good condition. Interior illustration of "A Gentleman in Kharki" by R. Caton Woodville. Rudyard Kipling’s The Absent-Minded Beggar first published at the outbreak of the Second Boer War 1899–1902 is a notable example of patriotic literature mobilized for imperial causes. Written to rally support for British troops and their families the poem was quickly transformed into a piece of popular ephemera with the first illustrated edition marketed through The Daily Mail as part of a charitable appeal. The publication’s sales generated significant funds for the reservists’ families illustrating how literature journalism and philanthropy intersected within the culture of British imperialism.
