This copy includes a unique dust jacket by Jean Jullien. The acrylic gouache painting on two sides of acetate shows Mowgli Baloo and Bagheera peering through an opening in the forest. The acetate allows their view to be the original pictorial design of elephants on the front cover of the binding. A charity auction to benefit the House of Illustration was held on 11 December 2017. Book illustrators fashion artists painters and artists were asked to choose a book which appealed to them. A first edition was then obtained and the artist provided a unique dust jacket. With reference to his choice of book Jullien stated that "I grew up watching and loving the Disney version and am always interested in revisiting popular culture landmarks. I find that their endurance to time and iteration is a tribute to their efficiency and quality". The charity's concept for artists to engage with a first edition is particularly effective here as the original binding plays a new illustrative role with Jullien's dust jacket. 1897ref. 153245London: Macmillan and Co. 1897. First edition of Kipling’s classic tale of the Grand Banks cod fishery a coming-of-age story long regarded as one of the great novels of the nineteenth century. Octavo original blue cloth elegantly stamped and lettered in gilt all edges gilt with a frontispiece and 21 illustrations. In very good condition with rubbing inscription to the half-title page. Illustrated by I.W. Taber. Like his two Jungle Books Kipling wrote this morality tale of life aboard a New England fishing boat while living near Brattleboro Vermont his wife’s hometown. The book thus contains “something of his feelings about America—both his affection and his irritation” Carpenter & Prichard 296. “This is the only book of Kipling’s which is set entirely in America. All the characters are American. Not only that but the heart of the book—its moral in a single sentence—is one of Kipling’s main beliefs of this period expressed in terms essentially American or perhaps more particularly New England. He put it later in verse: ‘And the Gods of the Copy-book Maxims said: ‘If you don’t work you will die!’ It is a saga of hard physical work in conflict with natural forces. It is a book which could hardly have been written by anyone who did not admire Huckleberry Finn; it is a book whose claim to survival rests mainly on detail and it is all American detail” Mason 119.
