Collecting Kipling's poetry for the first time First British edition signed limited issue number 90 of 100 sets numbered and signed by Kipling in each volume. The publisher Frank N. Doubleday famously dubbed this the "Whole Damn Thing" edition bringing together as it did the full breadth of Kipling's poetry up to the point of publication. This was the first "Inclusive Edition" an idea established between Kipling and Doubleday at Brown's Hotel in February 1919. The "Inclusive Edition" was republished in expanded forms in 1926 and 1932 followed by the "Definitive Edition" 1940 after Kipling's death. The present edition was published in America one month earlier but without the additional poem "Mowgli's Song". 3 vols octavo. Title pages printed in red and black. 1897ref. 153245London: Macmillan and Co. 1897. First edition of Kipling’s classic tale of the Grand Banks cod fishery a coming-of-age story long regarded as one of the great novels of the nineteenth century. Octavo original blue cloth elegantly stamped and lettered in gilt all edges gilt with a frontispiece and 21 illustrations. In very good condition with rubbing inscription to the half-title page. Illustrated by I.W. Taber. Like his two Jungle Books Kipling wrote this morality tale of life aboard a New England fishing boat while living near Brattleboro Vermont his wife’s hometown. The book thus contains “something of his feelings about America—both his affection and his irritation” Carpenter & Prichard 296. “This is the only book of Kipling’s which is set entirely in America. All the characters are American. Not only that but the heart of the book—its moral in a single sentence—is one of Kipling’s main beliefs of this period expressed in terms essentially American or perhaps more particularly New England. He put it later in verse: ‘And the Gods of the Copy-book Maxims said: ‘If you don’t work you will die!’ It is a saga of hard physical work in conflict with natural forces. It is a book which could hardly have been written by anyone who did not admire Huckleberry Finn; it is a book whose claim to survival rests mainly on detail and it is all American detail” Mason 119.
