1903ref. 154195London: Macmillan & Co. Limited 1903. Magnificent illustrations for Kipling's classic and considered by some to be the finest book illustrations ever published First edition sole impression. Macmillan issued this sumptuous portfolio at five guineas advertising the illustrations as reproductions "in colour from the Original Drawings in the highest style of Lithography". The 16 watercolours had been exhibited at the Dutch Gallery in London and were subsequently incorporated in reduced format into Macmillan's 1908 edition of The Jungle Book. The illustrations rank among the Detmold brothers' most celebrated work. A modern study of British book illustration describes the series as a "masterpiece of Edwardian era" singling out Shere Khan in the Jungle for its synthesis of Japanese pictorial influence anatomical observation and elaborate detail. Quoting Rodney Engen's study of the golden age of illustration it notes how the brothers' understanding of nature enabled them to create the "mythology and harshness of the natural world". Kipling's popular series of tales set in different historical eras including Roman Britain Anglo-Saxon England The Norman Conquest The Middle Ages and the Tudor Period. The stories are all told to two children living near Pevensey East Sussex by characters magically plucked out of history by 'Puck'. Traditionally the term 'Puck' referred to a malicious spirit or demon of popular superstition and from the 16th century the name of a mischievous goblin or Hobgoblin similar to that appearing in Shakespeare's 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' the fairy scene from which is acted out here. Although 'Puck' is seen as a children's book in the same way 'Treasure Island' or 'King Solomon's Mines' are viewed the story-tellers are adults and the romances they describe would only be suitable for older readers. 1909ref. 144356New York: B. W. Dodge & Company 1909. First edition first issue with gilt lettering an unauthorized piracy by Dodge and Company reprinting Kipling's contributions from various Indian newspapers. The first issue can be distinguished by the gold lettering on the spine and front cover; in response to the piracy Kipling instructed his regular American publisher Doubleday to produce a rival publication to undercut the piracy. To compete with the new authorized version Dodge & Company bound remaining sheets of the book in a binding using a cheaper red lettering rather than gilt. Richards notes that the publisher apparently retained many unsold copies for the number of surviving fine dust jackets implies that a cache of copies was issued many decades later. Octavo. Original blue cloth spine and front cover lettered in gilt. With dust jacket. A fine copy in near-fine jacket with only very light shelfwear. Richards A227; Stewart 324. hardcover
