1932rif. 135221London: Macmillan and Co. Limited 1932. Later printing of Kipling's Two Jungle Books in one volume. Octavo original red cloth decorated in gilt with illustrations by J. Lockwood Kipling and W.H. Drake. In very good condition. Bookplate and small ownership inscription. Kipling's Jungle Books center on the story of Mowgli an orphaned 'man-cub' who is raised in the jungle of India by wolves where he comes to learn the Laws of the Jungle. A major theme throughout the books is abandonment followed by fostering as in the life of Mowgli echoing Kipling's own childhood. Another is law vs. freedom; the stories are not about animal behavior but about human archetypes in animal form. The books remain popular to this day and have been adapted several times for film and other media including the classic Walt Disney 1967 animation and its 2016 remake. 1901rif. 136986London: Macmillan and Co. Limited 1901. First English edition of what many consider Kipling’s masterpiece. Octavo original cloth. Illustrated with photographs of clay reliefs by John Lockwood Kipling including tissue-guarded frontispiece two pages of advertisements at rear. In fine condition. Housed in a custom half morocco made by Asprey and Garrard. An exceptional example. Kim unfolds against the backdrop of The Great Game the political conflict between Russia and Britain in Central Asia. The novel made the term "Great Game" popular and introduced the theme of great power rivalry and intrigue. It is set after the Second Afghan War which ended in 1881 but before the Third probably in the period 1893 to 1898. The novel is notable for its detailed portrait of the people culture and varied religions of India. "The book presents a vivid picture of India its teeming populations religions and superstitions and the life of the bazaars and the road." Considered by many to be Kipling's masterpiece opinion appears varied about its consideration as children's literature or not. Roger Sale in his history of children's literature concludes "Kim is the apotheosis of the Victorian cult of childhood but it shines now as bright as ever long after the Empire's collapse." It was the basis for the 1950 film starring Errol Flynn Dean Stockwell and Paul Lukas. Named by Modern Library as one of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century. In 2003 the book was listed on the BBC's The Big Read poll of the UK's "best-loved novel." Macmillan and Co., Limited hardcover

1885rif. 155839Lahore: The "Civil and Military Gazette" Press 1885. An early Kipling rarity and first appearance of a classic ghost story First edition first impression of the book written by members of the Kipling family. Published in an edition of 250 copies it is rare in original wrappers and with advertisements at the end. The book includes the first appearance of "The Phantom 'Rickshaw'" and "The Strange Ride of Morrowbie Jukes C. E.". Kipling described the conception of this work in his autobiography Something of Myself 1937. He noted that "in the cold weather of 1885 we four made up a Christmas annual. which pleased us a good deal and attracted a certain amount of attention. Later much later it became a 'collector's piece' in the US book-market and to that extent smudged the memories of its birth". The 16 pieces comprising eight in prose and eight in verse were written by "four Anglo-Indian writers" as described on the title page and remaining anonymous throughout the book who were Kipling his father mother and sister. Kipling had initiated the publication with the Civil and Military Gazette and it was sold by subscription. This slim volume gave the 19 year old writer an opportunity to publish his work and he contributed half of the texts. The ghost stories would become better-known and were reprinted within The Phantom 'Rickshaw and other tales in 1890. Kipling's father had been somewhat against publication of Quartette and wrote to Margaret Burne-Jones that he had hoped that someone would "rap Rudyard's knuckles for the unwholesomeness of 'The Phantom 'Rickshaw' and the coarseness of the 'Tragedy of Teeth'". The binding of the publication was particularly chaotic. According to Kipling the work took place at night by candlelight and he provided workers on overtime with tots of brandy and plugs of free tobacco to encourage the "forty odd men besides binders to keep Quartette going". Publication was announced on 19 December and the front cover was possibly designed by John Lockwood Kipling then serving as the first principal of the Mayo School of Art in Lahore. Richards notes that the advertisements "sometimes vary in number". He states "copies are known with only three leaves or four leaves or six or even eight with a blank final yellow leaf instead of the more standard seven. Copies were also bound without advertisements at Kipling's direction for family members. In some copies the last of the seven leaves of advertisements is pink rather than pale yellow". Additionally "the rear endsheet has been excised from some copies. with the stub pasted to the terminal leaf of advertisements". The present copy carries seven leaves of which the final leaf is pink. Octavo. Original wrappers printed in black. Housed in a red cloth chemise with a red morocco-backed slipcase. Ownership signature on front wrapper. Loss to most of spine minor chip at top right corner of front wrapper some slight rust-staining; a very good copy and a particularly attractive example. The publisher's archives note that 50 copies of each pamphlet were printed. Complete sets in this condition are rare. Doubleday made extensive use of limited printings. to establish copyright in each country". Richards in his bibliography notes that it was reported that "most of the few copies printed" of this title "were mailed to newspapers and destroyed being separated into leaves for the convenience of linotype operators". The present pamphlets represent the true first editions and provide slightly edited versions removing colloquialisms for an American audience of articles simultaneously published within The Daily Telegraph on 7 10 14 19 21 and 24 December 1914. The sub-titles of the pamphlets comprise: "The Men at Work" "The Quality of the Machine" "Guns and Supply" "Canadians in Camp" "Indian Troops" "A Territorial Battalion and a Conclusion". 6 vols octavo. Rare in this near-fine condition First American edition first printing of the first trade book edition of Kipling's novel. This semi-autobiographical work deals with the theme of unrequited love; the elusive character Maisie is based on the Slade artist Flo Garrard who Kipling was unsuccessful in courting following the breakdown of his engagement to Caroline Taylor in 1890. The true first edition comprises a copyright edition which was filed for copyright in the US on 7 November 1890 and the serial rights were acquired by Lippincott's Monthly Magazine for its January 1891 issue appearing in Australia the UK and the US.
