First Edition with frontispiece maps in red and black and 9 maps 2 folding in red and black free endpapers mildly browned; original regimental red cloth upper boards blocked with crest in gilt gilt backs gilt tops a near fine set in the original binding. Vol I: The First Battalion; Vol. II: The Second Battalion and Appendices. The standard history of the regiment in the Great War including ROH and awards & decorations. Kipling undertook the history of the regiment in WWI following the death in action of his son John at the Battle of Loos whilst serving with the Second Battalion; a personal tragedy from which the author never fully recovered. After five and a half years of research 'done with agony and bloody sweat' the work was immediately recognised as both a military and a literary masterpiece. 'One could be assured that when Mr. Kipling turned his hand to a regimental history the result would be very different to the ordinary. The particular invention wherewith he has enriched this book is a sort of chorus - the comment of the private soldier upon the events narrated which is witty and effective. Mr. Kipling has also brought to bear his magic upon that most matter-of-fact of records the battalion war diary and has made it live. Generally speaking he has composed a noble tribute to the great regiment in the ranks of which he lost his son' Falls. Enser p.66;Falls p.117; Sutcliffe p.14; White p. 45. Macmillan, hardcover

During the course of 1914 and 1915 some of the most celebrated poets of the day published their work The Times. These included Kipling Laurence Binyon 1869-1943 de La Mare Noyes et al. This special supplement collected these poems illustrated with evocative line drawings. This issue preceded the election of the Lloyd George cabinet of 1916 and Northcliffe's appointment as Director of Propaganda. Although undoubtedly patriotic in its inspiration this supplement is less shrill in tone than its contemporary Northcliffe's Overseas Daily Mail which expressed in no uncertain terms its mission to recruit young men from the Dominions into the sorry ranks of those bogged down on the Western Front. In good condition edges tanned with tears wet stain on some pages on the bend. . The Times / J.P. Bland [1915] Hardcover

In 1/1878 Kipling was admitted to the United Services College at Westward Ho! Devon a school founded a few years earlier to prepare boys for the armed forces. The school proved rough going for him at first but led to firm friendships & provided the setting for his schoolboy stories Stalky & Co. published years later. During his time there he met & fell in love with Florence Garrard the model for Maisie in his 1st novel The Light That Failed initially published in 1890 in Lippincott's Monthly Magazine. Dick Heldar is a war correspondent & an artist known for the drawings he sends home to the London papers from wars in exotic places like Sudan. When he returns to London he attempts to make a career for himself as a serious artist & encounters his childhood sweetheart Maisie. They fall in love. Then he learns that a minor problem with his eyes is actually the onset of blindness incurable--the result of a head wound he took during the war. As his vision fails the light of everything around him--his life his hopes his dreams--fail with it. There are terrible choices to be made between the love of the woman he treasures & the love of the men who stood by him at the front. From Goodreads. Laura J. W. rated 5. it was amazing · review of another edition Shelves: british-authors classics literary-fiction short-stories Kipling is of his time this must not be forgotten it's unfortunate that I feel I must say this as the current climate for such classics is tenuous. Each tale has its special cadence that is from a time and place that is exotic in one sense but yet not people are people no matter where they are it's the human condition inter-racial love soldier's on the verge of mutiny kings laborers life and death. I have loved Kiplings work since I was a little girl when we read "Rikki-Tikki Tavi" and "The Elephant's Child" and of course "The Jungle Book" I grew up with the Disney film but read the book later and loved it more. My copy is an old one a beautiful white and blue cloth cover with stamped gold leaf filigree and letters it's quite beautiful as an object in pristine condition for its age inscribed in faded black ink on the inside with a previous owners name and dated 1901. It caught my eye at my favorite antique shop the Antique Pavilion in Bouckeville NY and I am happy add it to my collection of vintage books. R. F. Fenno & Company hardcover
