Complete with twenty-two plates and text illustrations throughout. Spine in compartments with raised bands and elephant motif. All edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. Original cloth cover bound in at rear. A very attractive example clean and bright throughout in a charming binding. A classic work of children's literature and one of Kipling's most beloved titles Just So Stories compiles origin tales like "How the Leopard Got its Spots" and "How the Elephant Got his Trunk" and "How the Camel Got His Hump." The book was charmingly illustrated by Kipling himself who reported that the stories were born of out the bedtime tales that he told his daughter. Kipling is of course best known for The Jungle Book and its sequel which earned him the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1907 and secured his place in the canon of English storytelling. Based on folktales and legends that Kipling learned during his childhood in India the Jungle Books were met with huge success upon publication and continue to enthrall readers of all ages to this day. According to Professor Edwin L. Miller their publication "caused even severe critics of Kipling's previous work to admit that he is a writer of inspired genius." Largely focused on man's relationship to nature the Jungle Books in part narrate the tales of Mowgli a human "man-cub" raised by wolves as he tries to find his proper place in the world. For contributions like these Kipling became the first English-language writer and the youngest ever to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature. Fine. Macmillan and Co., Limited unknown

One from a set of four by Rudyard Kipling. From our photographs you will find an enhanced line of 'In Black and White' short stories. This is Kipling's personal copy which is one of a unique limited first edition of 1050 produced in 1897 by Macmillan & Co. of London specially for Rudyard Kipling. In addition to the enhanced line of stories you will see on this restored book one of the first examples of Rudyard's 'elephant swastika lotus leaf motifs' which became Rudyard's emblem for the next 30 years. Rudyard Kipling gave this edition to Colonel Arthur Cory father of author Annie Sophie Cory whose pen name was Victoria Cross. In turn Colonel Cory on his return to London from Lahore sold this book for £5 to Jack Lang's grandfather. Overall this book is in a good condition. Frost Books was gifted this book by Jack Lang from Jack's Cambridge library. This is an original book from the library gathered by the famous Cambridge Don computer scientist food and wine connoisseur Jack Arnold LANG. Jack founded the Michelin Guide 'Midsummer House'- Cambridge's paramount restaurant. This dining experience is hidden amongst the grassy pastures and grazing cattle of Midsummer Common and perched on the banks of the River Cam. In 2008 Jack was one of the co-founders of the Raspberry Pi Foundation alongside other members of the Department and acted as the Foundation's Chair. The project's original goals were modest: to build and distribute low-cost computers for prospective applicants to our Computer Science degree. Initially the project was a "success disaster" as Jack would say as demand far outstripped the low-scale manufacturing plans. Ultimately the Raspberry Pi became the UK's most successful computer with more than 60 million sold to date. Jack was drawn to the educational possibilities of the Raspberry Pi its potential uses in emerging economies and the way it could support self-directed learning. Macmillan & Co. hardcover

1899ref. 90256London: Daily Mail 1899. Quarto printed on white satin. Oblong folio in triptych form opening to six panels with portrait of Kipling to cover reproduction of a sketch by R. Caton Woodville "A gentleman in kharki" at center panel; Kipling's poem is reproduced from manuscript on the first and third interior panels. A beautifully-preserved example a trifle aged at margins but free of perforations or loss; Very Good to Near Fine. A fundraising souvenir one of several versions of this text produced to benefit families of British soldiers in the Boer War. Copies printed on satin were hawked by programme girls throughout the theatres of London for the princely sum of One Guinea. Ours is the special issue noted by Richards produced for the actress Lilly Langtry and offered for sale at the Garrick Theatre on Nov. 24 1899. The rear panel bears the printed legend: "Presented by Mrs. Lilly Langtry on the occasion of the 100th performance of the "Degenerates" at the Garrick Theatre." 1909ref. 90334New York: Doubleday Page & Company 1909. First American Edition. Octavo. 19.5cm. Publisher's deep blue cloth lavishly decorated in gilt and silver to spine and front board. 77pp. printed rectos only; 16pp. fictional advertisments to rear. Bright and straight with some light scuffing to spine ends and extremities a little darkened to the spine; internally clean and fresh color pictorial endpapers by Leyendecker color frontispiece with tissue guard color plates. A very good copy of a pretty book. A most unusual bit of Kipling in the shape of a fantastic vision of the future in which the majority of air travel is via dirigible public industrial or private and which takes the form of a journalistic account of the aerial mail service for some future magazine or other a little optimistic of Kipling to assume we would have journalism in the 21st century. This heady and dramatic vision of the year 2000 is embellished with a selection of advertisments and blurbs for private airships dirigible engineering equipment and classified ads looking for pilots "Must be a member of the Church of England." in a pseudo-documentary transmedial fashion. The end result is an entertaining and deeply unserious bit of speculative fiction. Doubleday, Page & Company unknown

Oblong 8vo. 4.4 x 6.4 inches. 8 double leaves uncut at the top of the pages. Each double leaf has a dark green rule and dot border the text printed in black with green initial letters. Half title has "IF" printed in green within an ornamental black panel the same printed onto the front board but in red with the addition of the author's name. This version with the green colour printing is Richards' variant a. The text pages are clean and fresh and have been professionally re-cased into the binding but without the blank endpapers otherwise a very good copy in the publishers original light brown paper covered boards; - Richards' binding variant iii a- with a couple of small chips and some rubbing and bumping to the spine and a little minor marking to the rear board but overall is a very good example. The Publishers note on page 5 appears in four different variants with priority unknown and this copy has variant ii. Despite being re-cased this is an attractive and clean bright copy of this uncommon little book. Published probably November 1910 very shortly after the Poem first appeared in the book Rewards and Fairies October 1910 this separate publication was issued to capitalise on the huge and instant popularity of what has become Kipling's most enduring work of verse. A poll taken by the BBC in the UK in 2005 voted it as Britain's favourite Poem polling twice as many votes as the number 2 choice Lord Tennyson's The Lady of Shallot. Originally written in 1895 IF was inspired by the actions of Dr. Leander Starr Jameson a British Officer whose forces were defeated by the Boers in 1895 but who was portrayed as a victorious hero by the British press the poem is a powerful masterclass in maintaining the British stiff upper lip. --- David Alan Richards; Rudyard Kipling. 1937ref. 7813London: The Macmillan Co 1937. The Sussex Edition. Very Good . One of 575 numbered sets signed by the author in the first volume. Leaves measuring 240 x 160 mm with the set occupying 141 cm 55 in of shelf space. A Very Good set. Bound for the publisher by James Burn & Co. in full reddish-brown Niger morocco. Double ruled in gilt. Spine in six compartments with raised bands. Top edge gilt. Sunning and speckling to some spines and some rubbing to raised bands and edges. Very clean throughout. Printed in Edinburgh by R&R Clark Ltd. on handmade paper. The Sussex Edition which has become the most desirable collected edition of Kipling's works was edited by Kipling himself and including two volumes of previously uncollected prose. The edition published the year after Kipling's death was intended as a complete retrospective on Kipling's career and the definitive edition of his works. The superbly produced set of course includes Kipling's most lauded fiction - The Jungle Book Kim and Just So Stories - as well as his poems and nonfiction capturing the scope of his literary output. A contemporary review in the Times Literary Supplement lauded the production: "The publishers are justified in the use of the epithet 'superb' to describe this edition. The fine hand-made paper and Bembo type are equally satisfactory but perhaps the binding is still more notable. It is.Niger leather lettered and simply ornamented in gold. The volumes.are comparatively slim and so easy to hold; and they have an air of durability and of being meant for reading as well as for keeping which is not always the case with éditions de luxe."
