1900ref. 9720London c. 1900. Second Anglo-Boer War souvenir handkerchief 45 x 45 cm printed in blue ink on fine linen a couple of trivial spots blank verso. Set in the borders of a map showing the contested regions of South Africa chiefly Orange Free State and Transvaal is the text of Rudyard Kipling's poem 'The Absent-Minded Beggar' with the music of Arthur Sullivan. The map is further adorned with portraits of Queen Victoria and Field Marshal Lord Roberts who was commander of British forces in the field between December 1899 and December 1900. It was published by the Daily Mail then a relatively new but highly successful British newspaper: established in 1896 its circulation had soared to over a million - the largest in the world - by the war's end in 1902. Kipling presented his poem to the Mail which established a charitable fund soon known as the Absent Minded Beggar Fund to provide comforts for British troops on campaign and support for their families at home. Sullivan was prevailed upon to set it to music and it was first sung in public in November 1899. It caught the public mood and was reproduced in many forms. The handkerchiefs were in circulation by March 1900. Local newspapers carry advertisements from wholesalers and retailers around the country all promising to donate a portion of the profits to the fund. Advertising in the Bradford Daily Telegraph 8 March 1900 one vendor described them as the latest novelty a work of art further suggesting that they could make a useful present everybody pleased with them. An Exeter draper excitedly advertised another delivery in the March 28 issue of the Western Echo. They seem to have sold for between twopence and threepence each. Map unknown

1897ref. 154961897. With Illustrations by I.W. Taber. London: Macmillan and Co. 1897. 2 pp undated ads. Original blue cloth pictorially decorated in gilt all page edges gilt. First English Edition published about a month after the American. This is Kipling's great novel about the cod fishing fleet of Gloucester Massachusetts written while the newlywed Kiplings lived in Vermont. Kipling freely acknowledged that the book owed much to Dr. James Conland of Brattleboro who brought the Kiplings' elder daughter into the world -- for Conland had been a member of the Massachusetts fishing fleet and it was he who took Kipling to explore the wharves and quays of Boston and Gloucester. The American edition in fact is dedicated to Conland; this English edition bears no dedication. This is the only book of Kipling's which is set entirely in America. All the characters are American. Not only that but the heart of the book -- its moral in a single sentence -- is one of Kipling's main beliefs of this period expressed in terms essentially American or perhaps more particularly New England. He put it later in verse: ".If you don't work you will die!" It is a saga of hard physical work in conflict with natural forces. It is a book which could hardly have been written by anyone who did not admire Huckleberry Finn; it is a book whose claim to survival rests mainly on detail and it is all American detail Mason. CAPTAINS COURAGEOUS was the fourth and last volume to be bound in Macmillan's attractive gift binding style used for the JUNGLE BOOKs in 1894-1895 and for SOLDIER TALES in 1896. In 1937 forty years after publication this tale was made into a film starring Freddie Bartholomew Spencer Tracy who won an Oscar Lionel Barrymore and Mickey Rooney. This is a near-fine copy spine less than bright slight rubbing at the extremities light foxing; the original black-coated endpapers are not cracked. Richards A103; Stewart 163. unknown

1901ref. 153691901. London: Macmillan and Co. 1901. 2 pp undated ads. Original red cloth with Ganesha device in gilt. First English Edition of the book that "is acknowledged as Kipling's masterpiece in fiction. The novel is the finest written about the India of the British Empire" CGEL. It follows the adventures of an orphan son of a British soldier who is raised by an Indian woman becomes a disciple to a Lama and ultimately becomes an undercover agent as well. The illustrations are by John Lockwood Kipling the author's father. The American edition is considered to have been published earlier though in the same month as the English one. As with most of Kipling's British editions published by Macmillan the binding is red cloth with in gilt the "Ganesha" device -- an elephant's head with a swastika the latter had been a ubiquitous symbol in India for millennia; its use ceased in the early 1930s when events in Germany gave the symbol a whole new meaning. This is a very good copy front endpaper slightly cracked at the gutter light speckling of the cloth plus one small stain on the rear cover; as always there is some foxing of the endpapers and of the frontispiece tissue guard and there is minor rubbing of the gilt elephant. Richards A174; Stewart 254; Livingston 250. One of the books selected as a "Modern Library 100" for the 20th Century. unknown
