An interesting edition being a salesman's sample volume with applique applied to paste down describing the other titles in the set the prices of each and so on. réf. 42020thanking her for her "letter and for your news which I am glad to have although I am sorry it is not better. I know that you will understand that letter-writing is outside the possibilities these days; we are all so hard at work. I though of you when I was At Dartmouth. I was only there twenty-four hours; I went for a certain purpose and returned directly I achieved it. Trix is still at Jersey and the news is about the same. I have myself some hope that the war may serve to rouse here a little." 1 side 4to. Bateman's Burwash Sussex headed paper 22nd August Sybil Heeley was the daughter of Wilfred Lucas Heeley Kipling used to spell the surname Healey. He had been a schoolfriend of Edward Burne-Jones in Birmingham and had been engaged to Kipling's aunt Caroline. Trix is Kipling's younger sister Alice. At the beginning of the First World War like many other writers Kipling wrote pamphlets and poems enthusiastically supporting the UK war aims of restoring Belgium after it had been occupied by Germany together with generalised statements that Britain was standing up for the cause of good. In September 1914 Kipling was asked by the government to write propaganda an offer that he accepted. In 1914 Kipling was one of 53 leading British authors a number that included H. G. Wells Arthur Conan Doyle and Thomas Hardy who signed their names to the "Authors' Declaration." This manifesto declared that the German invasion of Belgium had been a brutal crime and that Britain "could not without dishonour have refused to take part in the present war." unknown
réf. 42265regretting that he does "not see the least chance of being able to come up to London in time for your meeting but I do not think it is necessary to assure you of my very keen interest in the object of it. Nobody who has travelled even up and down the line from the colony to Pretoria can fail to see the enormous amount of work that there is to be done and of course away from the line that work is even more urgent." 1 side A4 Bateman's Burwash 6th June The recipient is the Irish poet architectural writer and artist Alys Fane TROTTER née Keatinge 1863-1961 whose husband Alexander Pelham TROTTER 1857-1947 was a major force in electrical engineering in the Cape Colony in southern Africa. For Kipling's friendship with the Trotters from his time at the Cape see Thomas Pinney ed. The Letters of Rudyard Kipling 1990 volume 4 page 393. There is an article about Kipling's involvement with the Trotters by Tanya Barben which includes the paragraph "The Kiplings were quickly absorbed into Cape Town's social scene often through Rhodes's contacts. Alys Fane-Trotter the doyenne of writers about Cape architecture at the time recalled that the 'Kiplings were charming to us and Rudyard would spend the afternoon sitting on our very humble stoep drawing wonderful pictures for the children and telling us first drafts of stories he expected to write". This may be the only surviving letter to Alys. unknown
réf. 41834sending "Very many thanks for the Mason Monks & the Power Alcohol - which latter I will read and hold at your service for recall. I'm very glad that the Don begins to move. My. there gives me the idea that he will hasten with an immense slowness - Express trains at 18 m.p.h. do not promise expedition. I'm horribly afraid I shan't be able to be in Oxford on the 17th June but even if I miss that I expect we'll be able to meet a little later on." 2 sides 8vo. Bateman's Burwash Sussex headed paper 2nd June In 1902 Kipling bought Bateman's a house built in 1634 and located in rural Burwash. Bateman's was Kipling's home from 1902 until his death in 1936. The house and its surrounding buildings the mill and 33 acres were bought for £9300. It had no bathroom no running water upstairs and no electricity but Kipling loved it: "Behold us lawful owners of a grey stone lichened house A.D. 1634 over the door beamed panelled with old oak staircase and all untouched and unfaked. It is a good and peaceable place. We have loved it ever since our first sight of it" The recipient is very likely Kipling's friend Sir Charles OMAN 1860-1946 who was an eminent historian and Member of Parliament for Oxford. Oman nominated Kipling for the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1907 which he was then awarded. He is also remembered for having received a presentation copy of a book from Kipling in 1907 which contained on its flyleaf the holograph manuscript of an as-yet-unpublished and later celebrated poem of Kipling's titled "The Coin Speaks". "The Don begins to move" is a reference to the new express train built by Doncaster Works which entered into service in 1922 but which doesn't seem to have impressed Kipling very favourably. unknown
