Original publisher's blue cloth lettered gilt on spine and on front cover. First Edition. The second of the author's two future-war novels. These two novels are the sum total of his literary output. Kipling 1885-1947 an American both of whose books were published in London saw service as a Major in the American Ambulance Service during WWI. He is buried in Arlington Cemetary his wife next to him. A reviewer wrote: ""The Shadow of Glory is written with so much reason and with such an air of verity that politicians diplomats commanders and rulers may well take heed and realise that unless there is some strong united effort for peace universal war will soon involve all the great nations of the earth."" The author realising that an appendixis unusual for a purely imaginary story provides an Introduction to his long Appendix pp. 385-440 that as the reviewer said ""contains lists of the navies and Powers engaged their battle organisation the war strength of the land forces explanatory notes on technical details and a bibliography of naval and military subjects international law and statistical works which make valuable reference for those interested in the preservation of the world's peace."" Strikingly accurate in many respects predictive of World War I in Europe even to Russia joining the Allies with the action also taking place in the Pacific Manchuria and also involving the Japanese. In Bleiler: Imaginary wars and battles. Bookplate on the front pastedown of Jo and Bryan Hanson. Slight marking and wear to covers with two tiny nicks at spine hinges otherwise very good minus with clean text. Alston Rivers, hardcover

He has given the address as Batemans Burwash Sussex England. Provenance: By descent of Winifred Moulder daughter of Frederic Moulder Manager of Librairie Galignani. ""The manager at Librairie Galignani was F. Moulder who was imprisoned during the Nazi occupation of Paris. 1924réf. 11850Doubleday Doran and Company. New York. 1924. REPRINT SEPARATE EDITION U. S. Originally published in 1910. Oblong 8vo. 4.4 x 6.4 inches. 8 double leaves uncut at the top. Each double leaf has a green decorative border the text printed in black. Half title has "IF" printed in black within an ornamental green panel the same printed onto the front board with the addition of the author's name and a floral decoration. A remarkably clean and bright copy in original off white boards with decorative green border and black lettering and decoration to the front panel. Small blindstamp of Nicholson's Bookshop Richmond Ind on both blank free endpapers. A fine copy in the very rare original plain white paper dustwrapper. The wrapper has a few small closed tears to the edges but without any loss and it is complete. An attractive copy of this uncommon reprint edition of Kipling's most enduring work of verse in the rare dustwrapper. In 36 years of dealing in rare English literature this is only the second copy I have seen in the dustwrapper. A poll taken by the BBC in the UK in 2005 voted it as Britain's favourite Poem polling twice as many votes as the number 2 choice Lord Tennyson's The Lady of Shallot. Originally written in 1895 IF was inspired by the actions of Dr. Leander Starr Jameson a British Officer whose forces were defeated by the Boers in 1895 but who was portrayed as a victorious hero by the British press the poem is a powerful masterclass in maintaining the British stiff upper lip. Doubleday, Doran and Company. New York. 1924 hardcover
