1891réf. 157961891. Kipling John Lockwood. A Popular Sketch of Indian Animals in their Relations with the People. With Illustrations. London: Macmillan and Co. 1891. 2 pp undated ads plus 55 pp ads dated May 1891. Original terra-cotta cloth pictorially decorated in black and gilt. First Edition of this volume written and illustrated by Rudyard Kipling's father -- the genesis of his son's two JUNGLE BOOKs similarly illustrated by his father and of JUST SO STORIES illustrated by Rudyard. Each chapter is about a different type of Indian animal "Of Monkeys" "Of Elephants" "Of Camels" "Of Reptiles" etc. -- profusely illustrated by Lockwood himself as well as to a lesser degree by several others. BEAST AND MAN IN INDIA also includes the first appearance of several pieces by Rudyard -- two poems verse headings for nine of the chapters and extracts from two letters. With some leaves still unopened this is a near-fine copy of this attractively-bound book spine slightly darkened some foxing within. Quite uncommon. Richards B4; Stewart 104. unknown
1897réf. 154961897. With Illustrations by I.W. Taber. London: Macmillan and Co. 1897. 2 pp undated ads. Original blue cloth pictorially decorated in gilt all page edges gilt. First English Edition published about a month after the American. This is Kipling's great novel about the cod fishing fleet of Gloucester Massachusetts written while the newlywed Kiplings lived in Vermont. Kipling freely acknowledged that the book owed much to Dr. James Conland of Brattleboro who brought the Kiplings' elder daughter into the world -- for Conland had been a member of the Massachusetts fishing fleet and it was he who took Kipling to explore the wharves and quays of Boston and Gloucester. The American edition in fact is dedicated to Conland; this English edition bears no dedication. This is the only book of Kipling's which is set entirely in America. All the characters are American. Not only that but the heart of the book -- its moral in a single sentence -- is one of Kipling's main beliefs of this period expressed in terms essentially American or perhaps more particularly New England. He put it later in verse: ".If you don't work you will die!" It is a saga of hard physical work in conflict with natural forces. It is a book which could hardly have been written by anyone who did not admire Huckleberry Finn; it is a book whose claim to survival rests mainly on detail and it is all American detail Mason. CAPTAINS COURAGEOUS was the fourth and last volume to be bound in Macmillan's attractive gift binding style used for the JUNGLE BOOKs in 1894-1895 and for SOLDIER TALES in 1896. In 1937 forty years after publication this tale was made into a film starring Freddie Bartholomew Spencer Tracy who won an Oscar Lionel Barrymore and Mickey Rooney. This is a near-fine copy spine less than bright slight rubbing at the extremities light foxing; the original black-coated endpapers are not cracked. Richards A103; Stewart 163. unknown

1901réf. 153691901. London: Macmillan and Co. 1901. 2 pp undated ads. Original red cloth with Ganesha device in gilt. First English Edition of the book that "is acknowledged as Kipling's masterpiece in fiction. The novel is the finest written about the India of the British Empire" CGEL. It follows the adventures of an orphan son of a British soldier who is raised by an Indian woman becomes a disciple to a Lama and ultimately becomes an undercover agent as well. The illustrations are by John Lockwood Kipling the author's father. The American edition is considered to have been published earlier though in the same month as the English one. As with most of Kipling's British editions published by Macmillan the binding is red cloth with in gilt the "Ganesha" device -- an elephant's head with a swastika the latter had been a ubiquitous symbol in India for millennia; its use ceased in the early 1930s when events in Germany gave the symbol a whole new meaning. This is a very good copy front endpaper slightly cracked at the gutter light speckling of the cloth plus one small stain on the rear cover; as always there is some foxing of the endpapers and of the frontispiece tissue guard and there is minor rubbing of the gilt elephant. Richards A174; Stewart 254; Livingston 250. One of the books selected as a "Modern Library 100" for the 20th Century. unknown
