1892ref. 157451892. London: William Heinemann 1892. 8 pp undated ads. Original salmon cloth decorated in brown. First Edition of Kipling's only serious attempt at literary collaboration. A Vermonter Wolcott Balestier was an American author and publisher's agent in London; in fact in 1890 he and Heinemann had founded the Heinemann & Balestier publishing house in Leipzig books in English for the Continental market. He had written about the American "Wild West" and Kipling of course had written about India. THE NAULAHKA a misspelling of "naulakha" which in Hindu means nine lakhs i.e. 900000 rupees is an odd tale that combines these two environments into "A Story of East and West" -- a man from a Western boom-town attempts to get possession of a fabulous jewel in India. In December 1891 six months before this was published Balestier suddenly died at age 29 of typhoid fever in Dresden. Kipling had met Wolcott's sister Carrie and just a month after Wolcott died she became Kipling's wife; the Kiplings built their first home in Vermont and in memory of her brother named it "Naulakha" -- spelled correctly. The newlywed Kiplings lived in Vermont for four years toward the end of which Kipling wrote CAPTAINS COURAGEOUS about the Massachusetts fishing fleet; but it all came crashing down when Wolcott's brother Beatty was arrested for assaulting Kipling -- there was an altercation after Kipling had created a little garden on land he owned but had allowed Beatty to hay: the Kiplings fled to England. This is an unusually clean copy just about fine a hint of rubbing at the spine ends; such condition is scarce for this book in view of its soil-prone salmon-colored binding. Gerard F. Cobb is primarily remembered for his musical settings to Kipling's words this perhaps being his last such composition as he passed away in March of the year it was published. This song is unrecorded by OCLC and appears equally scarce in the trade; in fact the only references we can find to the piece online are are The Kipling Society citing a record of it in Rudyard Kipling A Bibliographical Catalogue by James McGregor Stewart and a 2005 recording released by ABC Records-Australia on an album titled When the Empire Calls. Day writes that "people uninterested in poetry 'qua' poetry were thrilled by the splendor and spread of empire as glorified in this work. Kipling's Toryism made the mediocre Alfred Austin the poet laureate in 1896 but Kipling was the unofficial laureate of the British empire." One of Britain's best-known writers Rudyard Kipling 1865-1936 is most famous for his works portraying the lives of the native population and colonialists on the Indian subcontinent. He was born in Bombay where his father ran an art school and he lived in India until the age of six. He was sent to school in England but chose to return to the East at 18. He proved to be a prolific author writing novels tales for children and adults and many poems. Kipling's wife was American and they lived for a time in Vermont but from 1896 the couple settled in England. Among his many honors are a Nobel Prize 1907 and the Gold Medal of the Royal Society of Literature 1926 which had previously only been awarded to Scott Meredith and Hardy. Copies of the present book are easy to find but they are not so readily available in reasonably priced pretty bindings like the one offered here. Methuen and Co unknown books
