1719rif. B3715New York: Charles Scribner’s Sons 1909 1911 1917 1919 1920. Lacks Part One of “From Sea to Sea” Volume XV otherwise a very fine set text and plates are clean and crisp and bound in handsome period binding. . Edition: New York Binding: Original publisher’s black ½ morocco with light blue marble boards spine in six compartments of raised bands and gilt floral motifs gilt text in two and three top edges gilt edges uncut occasionally unopened endpapers marbled. Notes: The later volumes vols XXVI XXVII & XXVIII are published in purple and dark blue boards. The “Outward Bound” edition was published in installments between 1897 until the end of Kipling’s life in 1936. The complete set eventually included 36 volumes; however variations appeared in the printing over the years. Text published in two volumes in earlier printings was combined into single volumes to save money on the part of the publishers. The published letters of Rudyard Kipling 2004 indicate that Kipling often disapproved of the cost-saving measures of Scribner’s preferring that later printings kept the same numeration of the volumes as the earlier ones. Size: 8vo. Illustration: Each volume with a frontispiece several illustrative plates throughout. Volume: 27 volumes of 36. Category: Book Literature; Book Bindings Sets; Charles Scribner’s Sons hardcover

1909rif. 144356New York: B. W. Dodge & Company 1909. First edition first issue with gilt lettering an unauthorized piracy by Dodge and Company reprinting Kipling's contributions from various Indian newspapers. The first issue can be distinguished by the gold lettering on the spine and front cover; in response to the piracy Kipling instructed his regular American publisher Doubleday to produce a rival publication to undercut the piracy. To compete with the new authorized version Dodge & Company bound remaining sheets of the book in a binding using a cheaper red lettering rather than gilt. Richards notes that the publisher apparently retained many unsold copies for the number of surviving fine dust jackets implies that a cache of copies was issued many decades later. Octavo. Original blue cloth spine and front cover lettered in gilt. With dust jacket. A fine copy in near-fine jacket with only very light shelfwear. Richards A227; Stewart 324. hardcover

rif. 52459London: Macmillan and Co. 1907. Fantasy FIRST SEPARATE EDITION. Octavo 21 x 14cm. With ninety-two numbered leaves printed on rectos only. Illustrated with sixteen plates in colour frontispiece with tissue guard present. Smartly bound in recent dark blue half calf over publisher's original gilt-pictorial sides top edge gilt. Some light marks and spots within exterior fine. An attractive copy. Noted in Bleiler and containing elements of the fantastic; whilst it does not deal with new inventions predictions of future wars or technological change as in Kipling's more overtly scientific romances this tale is concerned more with social consciousness and the dream-like state and is among his most psychologically interesting and controversial work. 'The Brushwood Boy' short story concerns fantasy dream-worlds. John W. Campbell described Kipling as "the first modern science fiction writer". Verne and Wells may be the fathers of Sci-Fi but it is Kipling who links them to the 'Golden Age' writers such as Robert A. Heinlein and Poul Anderson.
