1930ref. 158381930. Garden City NY: Doubleday Doran & Company 1930. Original light yellow wrappers lettered in green. First Edition of this short story being the American copyright issue -- 75 copies printed and privately distributed in August 1930 in order to secure copyright protection in America. The main story is the voyage generally reckoned to have taken place in or shortly after 60 AD during which St. Paul was shipwrecked on the island of Malta then called Melita -- the account of which given in Acts 27-28 has been said to be the most vivid account of a voyage and shipwreck in the whole of Greek and Latin literature. In Kipling's story that voyage is described in the conversation of three reminiscing seamen whose meeting provides a typically Kiplingesque "frame" for the main story kipling.org. This tale then appeared in the September issue of London Magazine and was subsequently collected in 1932 in LIMITS AND RENEWALS the last collection published during Kipling's life. A fine copy. Richards A389; Stewart 592. Housed in a morocco-backed slipcase with inner chemise. unknown books

This was the second of the four Kipling gift books bound similarly by Macmillan with SOLDIER TALES and CAPTAINS COURAGEOUS coming out the following two years respectively. This is an attractive copy very good-plus or possibly near-fine volume slightly askew as usual very light wear at the extremities; atypically other than the endpapers there is no foxing on the leaves within. This was issued as No. XIV in the "Indian Railway Library" -- though Wheeler published this THE SMITH ADMINISTRATION and LETTERS OF MARQUE without authority after Kipling had left India for England. As is typical for this volume that is extremely fragile more delicate than the authorized titles condition is good-to-very good -- with about half of the wrapper's spine perished and with chips at some corners. ref. 139497Unique foldout Artist Book by Barry McCallion. Fine in fine clamshell box. Signed and dated by the artist on the title page. From the colophon: "Excerpts from Kim Rudyard Kipling's novel occupy the recto pages of this book. The verso pages begin as a large emply circle where page after page images slowly accrete by the addition of common objects: a begging bowl prayer beads an arrow a chair a leaf a cloud. The verso and recto pages face each other developing and advancing as consectutive narratives one visual and the other verbal. I used Richard de Bas cream wove paper for the endpapers and white Rives BFK paper for the text block. The drawings are made with India ink pens and brushed Winsor Newton metallic inks and colors. The book has forty-five text pages and forty-five image pages. Rhonda Miller of myhandboundbooks in Halifax Nova Scotia bound the book in a simple brown leather cover.
