1930réf. 158381930. Garden City NY: Doubleday Doran & Company 1930. Original light yellow wrappers lettered in green. First Edition of this short story being the American copyright issue -- 75 copies printed and privately distributed in August 1930 in order to secure copyright protection in America. The main story is the voyage generally reckoned to have taken place in or shortly after 60 AD during which St. Paul was shipwrecked on the island of Malta then called Melita -- the account of which given in Acts 27-28 has been said to be the most vivid account of a voyage and shipwreck in the whole of Greek and Latin literature. In Kipling's story that voyage is described in the conversation of three reminiscing seamen whose meeting provides a typically Kiplingesque "frame" for the main story kipling.org. This tale then appeared in the September issue of London Magazine and was subsequently collected in 1932 in LIMITS AND RENEWALS the last collection published during Kipling's life. A fine copy. Richards A389; Stewart 592. Housed in a morocco-backed slipcase with inner chemise. unknown

The poems are given in both Latin and English on facing pages after a preface in Latin by Alfred Godley and Ronald Knox. Charles Graves described the orgins of the book in a letter: " It occurred to Kipling about the blackest time of the last war end of 1917 and early months of 1918 as a means of keeping up one's spirits and distracting our thoughts from present troubles and he wrote to me outlining his plan and making many admirable suggestions for subjects of the sham odes .he was 'the begetter' of the scheme. His next step was to secure a band of scholars to translate them into Latin and he could not have got a better-equipped company Alfred Godley Monsignor Ronald Knox Alan Ramsay and John Powell." The preface is written in the humorous spirit of the book with references to a codex preserved in the Grosspaniandrumpinacothecaand another in the Padoviensium Museum Trentunosettembrense. 1937réf. BIBLIO-56881Macmillan and Co. Ltd London Sussex Edition 1937. From the limited edition of 525 sets of which 500 were for sale. Full russet Niger morocco handmade paper gilt top other edges untrimmed as issued royal 8vo. xiii 432 1 pp. The Sussex Edition is the finest edition of Kipling's works sumptuously produced and also containing his final thoughts on the text having been revised by Kipling in his last years. Kipling died in 1936 and the edition was published posthumously. Complete sets of the 35 volumes are rare and desirable : only 525 sets were produced and many of these were destroyed when the publisher's warehouse was bombed in 1941. Single volumes such as that offered here are in practice still harder to find : we have a handful only of such single volumes and this represents a possibly unrepeatable chance for one admirer of this early collection of his short stories which first appeared in 1898 to acquire it in the most desirable edition. The contents of this volume are: Signed by the author and numbered 271. Head of spine bumped and somewhat worn with minor wear also to corners three small dents to rear board some ubtrimmed edges slightly darkened or duststained partly unopened otherwise Very Good.
