1923Best.-Nr. BIBLIO-51288N.p. n.d Dover first edition 1923. Edition of 60 copies or fewer. Patterned wrappers 'Indian design' 8vo. 8 leaves. From David Richard's 'Rudyard Kipling : A Bibliography': "The complementary texts are those of a letter written to Kipling by local postmaster Francis Fatt and the authors answer originally appearing in the Medicine Hat News of 22 December 1910. deprecating a suggestion that the name of Medicine Hat in the province of Alberta Canada be changed to something less colorful. This pamphlet was printed and distributed as a New Years favor and greeting by George Parker Winship then the Assistant Librarian of Harvard College." Kipling robustly concludes his advice: "What then should a city be re-christened that has sold its name - Judasville". Winship's publication was not authorized by Kipling and the work was never collected by Kipling in any edition of his works somewhat reinforcing Winship's statement in his preface: "This little tract for the times is printed in order that certain gentlemen who are known to their intimate acquaintances as Kipling fans may possess a first separate edition which some of their rivals in the engrossing game of book collecting will not be able to buy." The publisher has never been identified but was also responsinble for a similar unauthorized printing in the same year of 'Collah-Wallah and the Poison Stick'. Richards A357. John McGivering summarized the content for the Kipling Society website as follows: "This is an amusing little trifle that might well entertain adults as well as the children for whom it was intended being a fairy-tale with echoes of Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves from The Arabian Nights with a message indicating that the simplest way of doing something is probably the best. Fine copy in rubbed quarter-morocco slipcase with gilt spine-title and cloth chemise. Privately printed, New York, first (unauthorized) edition, 1925 hardcover

However many of these were destroyed when the publisher's warehouse was bombed in 1941. 35 vols royal 8vo full russet Niger morocco handmade paper top edges rough-gilded other edges untrimmed. several thousand pages. The Sussex edition is the definitive edition of Kipling's works splendidly produced and much sought after by collectors. Some contemporary Macmillan advertising material described it thus: "The Sussex Edition had been planned some years before the author's death and was designed to rank as the definitive edition of all his works in prose and verse in the most complete and handsome form. Kipling had undertaken a detailed revision of the text for this purpose and had autographed and numbered the first volume of each set. He left behind him careful instructions regarding the unpublished or uncollected writings which are so conspicuous and interesting a feature of the Sussex Edition. This material includes over sixty stories articles and speeches besides such groups of papers as The War in the Mountains Eyes of Asia and Brazilian Sketches none of them previously published in book form if at all in this country and the whole of his early or uncollected verse." From a contemporary review in the TLS: "The publishers are justified in the use of the epithet "superb" to describe this edition. The fine hand-made paper and Bembo type are equally satisfactory : but perhaps the binding is still more notable. It is . Niger leather lettered and simply ornamented in gold. The volumes though ten inches by six and three quarter inches in size are comparatively slim and so easy to hold; and they have an air of durability and of being meant for reading as well as for keeping which is not always the case with éditions de luxe. Set No.215. Armorial bookplate on the front pastedown endpaper of each volume: 'Ex Libris des Comtes Arrivabene Valenti-Gonzaga'. Spines rubbed and several volumes with some corner or edge-wear or small scrapes to the leather three volumes 5 6 7 with blotches to the spine sometimes extending slightly to the boards; otherwise a good set with good uniformity of colour not always the case with this edition. Internally excellent - clean fresh copies with most volumes unopened or largely so. Macmillan and Co. Ltd, London, Sussex Edition, 1937-39 hardcover

Broadside in quarter-morocco and cloth maroon slipcase with gilt spine-title and limp cloth chemise. 1 leaf. Kipling's memorial ode for his friend and hero Lord Roberts one of Britain's greatest generals whom he had earlier celebrated in "Bobs". "Lord Roberts" was written soon after Roberts' death in November 1914 - shortly before that Roberts had helped Kipling's son John secure a commission in his own regiment the Irish Guards to fight in France. Kipling had known and admired Roberts since his days as a young journalist in India in the 1880's and at the end of his own life Kipling wrote in "Something of Myself" that "the proudest moment of my young life was riding up Simla Mall besides Lord Roberts who asked me what the men were thinking. Kipling's powerful poem "The Outlaws" was his response to the German invasion of Belgium and the many reported atrocities. Full russet Niger morocco contrasting black-and-gilt title panes on spine handmade paper gilt top other edges untrimmed as issued marbled endpapers royal 8vo. vii-viii 373 2 pp. The Sussex Edition is the finest edition of Kipling's works sumptuously produced and also containing his final thoughts on the text having been revised by Kipling in his last years. Kipling died in 1936 and the edition was published posthumously. Complete sets of the 35 volumes are rare and desirable : only 525 sets were produced and many of these were destroyed when the publisher's warehouse was bombed in 1941. Single volumes such as that offered here are in practice still harder to find : we have a handful only of such volumes. This volume collects together the contents of three of Kipling's "Railway Library" volumes first published at the start of his career in India : Soldiers Three the first collection of the adventures of Mulvaney Learoyd and Ortheris 1888; The Story of the Gadsbys 1888 and In Black and White 1889.
