Puck summons figures from different periods of English history—soldiers craftsmen sailors nobles and ordinary people—who tell stories about their lives and times. Through these encounters the children learn about England's past from Roman and Norman times to later centuries. The book combines fantasy with historical fiction using the framework of Puck's magic to explore themes of memory heritage patriotism and the continuity of English life. His next step was to secure a band of scholars to translate them into Latin and he could not have got a better-equipped company Alfred Godley Monsignor Ronald Knox Alan Ramsay and John Powell."
