1900ref. 149441900. Also Letters from Julian Ralph Charles E. Hands and Douglas Story. Santiago de Chile: Hume & Co. 1900. Original printed fawn wrappers. First Edition unauthorized issued as a volume in the publisher's "Libreria Inglesa." This volume published in Chile includes three poems and two stories that Kipling wrote during the Boer War plus four poems written earlier; it is the first edition in book form anywhere of the poems "Pharaoh and the Sergeant" and "Kitchener's School" and of the Boer War tales "With Number Three" and "Surgical and Medical." "It has been said that this is the only case on record of a first edition of a book being published in a country never visited by the author and where people did not speak his language" Richards. Hume the proprietor of Santiago's main bookstore was a huge Kipling fan but it appears that he overestimated the Chilean Kipling market: he supposedly printed 400 copies but few sold and the remainder were either burned in 1906 or pulped at a paper mill in 1911 -- though some copies like this one apparently were neither read nor burned nor pulped. For this copy is as new -- no wear no soil leaves still unopened. Richards A166; Stewart 240. Housed in a cloth slipcase with inner chemise. unknown books

1909ref. 90334New York: Doubleday Page & Company 1909. First American Edition. Octavo. 19.5cm. Publisher's deep blue cloth lavishly decorated in gilt and silver to spine and front board. 77pp. printed rectos only; 16pp. fictional advertisments to rear. Bright and straight with some light scuffing to spine ends and extremities a little darkened to the spine; internally clean and fresh color pictorial endpapers by Leyendecker color frontispiece with tissue guard color plates. A very good copy of a pretty book. A most unusual bit of Kipling in the shape of a fantastic vision of the future in which the majority of air travel is via dirigible public industrial or private and which takes the form of a journalistic account of the aerial mail service for some future magazine or other a little optimistic of Kipling to assume we would have journalism in the 21st century. This heady and dramatic vision of the year 2000 is embellished with a selection of advertisments and blurbs for private airships dirigible engineering equipment and classified ads looking for pilots "Must be a member of the Church of England." in a pseudo-documentary transmedial fashion. The end result is an entertaining and deeply unserious bit of speculative fiction. Doubleday, Page & Company unknown books

1892ref. 157451892. London: William Heinemann 1892. 8 pp undated ads. Original salmon cloth decorated in brown. First Edition of Kipling's only serious attempt at literary collaboration. A Vermonter Wolcott Balestier was an American author and publisher's agent in London; in fact in 1890 he and Heinemann had founded the Heinemann & Balestier publishing house in Leipzig books in English for the Continental market. He had written about the American "Wild West" and Kipling of course had written about India. THE NAULAHKA a misspelling of "naulakha" which in Hindu means nine lakhs i.e. 900000 rupees is an odd tale that combines these two environments into "A Story of East and West" -- a man from a Western boom-town attempts to get possession of a fabulous jewel in India. In December 1891 six months before this was published Balestier suddenly died at age 29 of typhoid fever in Dresden. Kipling had met Wolcott's sister Carrie and just a month after Wolcott died she became Kipling's wife; the Kiplings built their first home in Vermont and in memory of her brother named it "Naulakha" -- spelled correctly. The newlywed Kiplings lived in Vermont for four years toward the end of which Kipling wrote CAPTAINS COURAGEOUS about the Massachusetts fishing fleet; but it all came crashing down when Wolcott's brother Beatty was arrested for assaulting Kipling -- there was an altercation after Kipling had created a little garden on land he owned but had allowed Beatty to hay: the Kiplings fled to England. This is an unusually clean copy just about fine a hint of rubbing at the spine ends; such condition is scarce for this book in view of its soil-prone salmon-colored binding. 1891ref. 05445MINE OWN PEOPLE Lovell Coryell 1891 first American edition a vg copy with a long introduction by Henry James. Among the first of the authors books to be published in the U.S. While this copy does indeed have a Table of Contents page that is placed after the printed facsimile letter in Kipling's hand and a title page as Lovell Coryell & Co. along with their address and no date printed at the base of same and furthermore has a binding where the base of the cloth spine is blank that is not stamped with any publisher information all which seem to be indices that suggest that this is a later issue this copy not only has a printed page following the half-title page which reads in total "This edition of my collected writings is issued in America with my cordial sanction / Rudyard Kipling / London March 1891" but also has the portrait frontispiece which is said NOT to be part of the Lovell and Coryell issue !!! Also it is not quite clear as to why the Lovell and Coryell issue does not "precede" the United States Book Company issue if in fact the United States Book Company is the successor "to" the John W. Lovell Company. Lovell, Coryell hardcover books
