ref. 00136London: Macmillan and Co. 1903. The Songs from Rudyard Kipling's "Just So Stories" KIPLING Rudyard. The Just So Song Book. Being the Songs from Rudyard Kipling's Just So Stories. Set to Music by Edward German. London: Macmillan and Co. 1903. First edition. Large quarto 12 1/4 x 9 3/4 inches; 311 x246 mm. 2 62 pp. Music. Original dark red cloth pictorially stamped in black on front cover and lettered in gilt on front cover and spine. Small area of slight discoloration on back cover. Front hinge hints at starting. Title tissue guard slightly browned and with a short tear at lower margin. Otherwise a fine copy. A charming and scarce musical companion to Rudyard Kipling's Just So Stories issued at the height of his popularity and designed for domestic performance. Edward German's settings - by turns playful lyrical and theatrically assured -translate Kipling's rhythmic verse into songs intended for both children and adults reflecting the Edwardian taste for cultivated family entertainment. Books combining Kipling's texts with original musical settings were produced in relatively small numbers and were often heavily used making clean copies increasingly difficult to find. This first edition of The Just So Song Book survives as an appealing example of early twentieth-century literary music publishing and an important adjunct to Kipling's most beloved work. "The texts of the twelve poems contained in the Just So Stories 1902 are here set to music by Edward German. The last song 'Rolling down to Rio' is substituted for 'I've never sailed the Amazon' which is here omitted" Stewart. Livingston 270 describing the first American edition. Stewart 269-A. Rudyard Kipling wrote Captains Courageous during the years he lived in Vermont with his young family in a house he designed to resemble a ship. The Dr. James Conland to whom the American edition is dedicated was the family physician whose stories of his time in a Massachusetts fishing fleet inspired this bildungsroman about a millionaire's son who learns the value of hard work at sea. The novel drew praise from Teddy Roosevelt and the 1937 film adaptation won Spencer Tracy an Oscar for his portrayal of a kindly fisherman. The first British edition slightly preceded by the first American edition was issued by Macmillan in pretty gift binding reflecting the status Kipling had already achieved as a writer. Signed copies are rare. The Macmillan and Company Limited unknown books

First edition of Kipling's very rare second book; the "two writers" of the title were Kipling and his sister Alice "Trix". Of the 39 poems mostly "echoes" or imitations of well-known poets 32 are ascribed to Kipling and 7 to his sister. First published in Lahore in August 1884 the volume appeared when Kipling then 18 years old had been living in India for nearly two years. It was printed by the Civil and Military Gazette Press where Kipling served as sub-editor and he personally oversaw its production. In December 1883 Kipling's mother brought his 15-year-old sister Trix from England to join him. Together they engaged in a series of literary experiments and playful compositions producing a substantial collection of poems-primarily parodies of well-known poets-by the spring of 1884. Encouraged by their efforts Rudyard published a selection of these works in August of that year under the title Echoes by Two Writers. The Poems: Echoes: Introduction 1. Brand new from publisher. 2014 Hard Cover. lxi 381 pp. Edited with an introduction and notes by Kaori Nagai. Inspiration for the Walt Disney film. The story of Mowgli the abandoned "man-cub" who is brought up by wolves in the jungles of Central India is one of the greatest literary myths ever created. As he embarks on a series of thrilling escapades Mowgli encounters such unforgettable creatures as the bear Baloo the graceful black panther Bagheera and Shere Khan the tiger with the blazing eyes. Other animal stories in The Jungle Books range from the dramatic battle between good and evil in "Rikki-tikki-tav" to the macabre comedy "The Undertakers." With The Jungle Books Rudyard Kipling drew on ancient beast fables Buddhist philosophy and memories of his Anglo-Indian childhood to create a rich symbolic portrait of man and nature and an eternal classic of childhood. This edition contains both of Kipling's Jungle Books as well as "In the Rukh" the story that introduced readers to Mowgli. Penguin Classics hardcover books

ref. 06549London: Macmillan and Co. Limited 1897. The Grand Banks - Where Boys Become Men" A Classic of the Sea KIPLING Rudyard. 'Captains Courageous' A Story of the Grand Banks. With illustrations by I. W. Taber. London: Macmillan and Co. Limited 1897. First edition. Small octavo 7 1/4 x 4 3/4 inches; 184 x 121 mm. viii 245 1 blank 2 advertisements pp. With twenty-two full-page illustrations by I. W. Taber. Publisher's blue cloth front cover and spine pictorially decorated in gilt dark gray coated endpapers all edges gilt. Minimal rubbing to extremities small bookseller's description neatly affixed to front paste-down. A touch of very light foxing otherwise a near fine copy the notoriously fragile endpapers remarkably fresh and intact. One of Kipling's most enduring and widely read novels Captains Courageous stands apart within his canon as a pure sea story drawn from his own experiences aboard fishing vessels off the Grand Banks of Newfoundland. First published in 1897 it tells the story of Harvey Cheyne a spoiled American boy transformed by hardship discipline and camaraderie after being swept overboard and rescued by a Gloucester fishing schooner. The novel's vivid depiction of life at sea - its dangers routines and moral code - owes much to Kipling's gift for observation and his admiration for working seamen. The result is a narrative at once adventurous and deeply humane often compared to the great maritime traditions of Dana and Melville but with a distinctly Kiplingesque emphasis on character and duty. Isaiah West Taber 1830-1912 is a slightly deceptive figure in this context - he was not primarily a book illustrator but one of the leading American photographers of the late 19th century based in San Francisco. That explains why the plates in Captains Courageous feel unusually "real": they are derived from photographic studies not traditional drawn illustration. The publisher's pictorial gilt cloth binding with its bold maritime design is particularly attractive and increasingly difficult to find in such well-preserved condition especially with the delicate coated endpapers intact and the gilt still bright. A handsome and increasingly scarce first edition of one of the great literary evocations of the sea. London: Macmillan and Co., Limited, 1897 unknown books
