A copy of 'Rewards and Fairies' published by Macmillan 1910 in the publisher's original red cloth with gilt lettering to the spine and the elephant's-head device in gilt to the front board. Some fading to the spine with light rubbing and pushing to the spine tips and corners. Without the elusive dust wrapper. Small name and letter to the front endpaper. Together with a framed etched portrait of Kipling by William Strang showing the author in profile SIGNED by Rudyard Kipling beneath the image with a sweeping underline. Strang's name appears within the plate at the lower left. Mounted and glazed in a narrow black frame with some age toning to the paper and mount and light wear to the frame. The backing retains the label of John Mathieson & Co. 20 Frederick Street Edinburgh and a handwritten note stating: "Etching of Rudyard Kipling & signed by him for William Maxwell." An attractive pairing bringing together Kipling's celebrated collection and a portrait bearing his autograph. Macmillan hardcover

Kipling composed the poem in 1895 as a tribute to Leander Starr Jameson following his failed raid against the Boers. It was published here on 4 October shortly after its first appearance in the October 1910 issue of the American Magazine. It was immediately popular and remains Kipling's most enduring poem. This collection of verses and stories is a continuation of Puck of Pook's Hill 1906. Octavo. With 4 plates by Frank Craig. Title page printed in red and black. Publisher's 2 pp. of advertisements at rear. Original red cloth spine lettered in gilt embossed central roundel of Ganesha to front cover in gilt top edge gilt. With dust jacket. Cloth sharp a couple of bumps to foot of spine foxing to endpapers and edges; jacket lightly chipped at extremities short split to rear fold spine a little toned flaps unpriced as issued: a very good copy in very good jacket. Octavo pp. xii 338 10 of publisher's catalogue four photolithographic plates after paintings by Frank Craig as called for. Publisher's original red cloth; titled in gilt to spine; elephant vignette in gilt to upper board. 'Presentation copy' within roundel blind-stamped to title-page. Two publisher's catalogue leaflets for Autumn 1910 laid-in. Spine somewhat faded; soiling to lower board and edges of upper board; elephant a touch rubbed. The usual offsetting to end-papers else internally clean. A very good copy. A collection of short stories and poems by Rudyard Kipling including the first appearance in print of his much loved the poem 'If'. Kipling later opined on the poem's ubiquity 'they were printed as cards to hang up in offices and bedrooms; illuminated text-wise. Twenty-seven of the Nations of the Earth translated them into their seven-and-twenty tongues and printed them on every sort of fabric.' Kipling Autobiographical Writings 111.
