réf. 884570London: Longman & Green Original green pictorial wrappers rebound in a contemporary 3/4 dark blue morocco binding with raised spine decorated and lettered in gilt. Marbled endpapers; t.e.g. A lovely copy with very light wear and age toning. The sequel to "The New Arabian Nights" this book contains a series of remarkable stories in which the protagonists encounter several characters who may or may not be conspirators in a bombing plot on behalf of Irish independence. The characters weave intriguing and troubling tales of their histories. The chapters stand alone as adventures but the whole is tied together nicely in the end. Stevenson manages to tell tales of murderous Mormons crazed Voodoo practitioners and wayward Bohemian princes among others. First Edition. 3/4 Morocco Over Wraps. Excellent. Small 8vo. Octavo 19.5cm.; green cloth over dark gray boards; paper title plate on cover and spine; dustjacket; 101pp.; A Fine copy. Dustjacket is unclipped with tears to the extremities; Very Good only. The book consists of four stories that read as letters home from soldiers from India and the North-West Frontier which take place in 1915 and 1916. "A Retired Gentleman" and "The Fumes of the Heart" are both fictionalized letters written from the perspective of wounded Indian soldiers a Rajput and a Sikh to their families. The second is cast as a dictated letter from a Sikh soldier to his brother and has dramatic asides and digressions from the injured soldier punctuating the text. As for the remaining two stories "The Private Account" is presented as a scene showing an Afghan family reading and responding to a letter from their son on the Western Front and the final story "A Trooper of Horse" takes the form of a letter from an unwounded Muslim soldier in France to his mother. doubleday unknown
