ref. 00136London: Macmillan and Co. 1903. The Songs from Rudyard Kipling's "Just So Stories" KIPLING Rudyard. The Just So Song Book. Being the Songs from Rudyard Kipling's Just So Stories. Set to Music by Edward German. London: Macmillan and Co. 1903. First edition. Large quarto 12 1/4 x 9 3/4 inches; 311 x246 mm. 2 62 pp. Music. Original dark red cloth pictorially stamped in black on front cover and lettered in gilt on front cover and spine. Small area of slight discoloration on back cover. Front hinge hints at starting. Title tissue guard slightly browned and with a short tear at lower margin. Otherwise a fine copy. A charming and scarce musical companion to Rudyard Kipling's Just So Stories issued at the height of his popularity and designed for domestic performance. Edward German's settings - by turns playful lyrical and theatrically assured -translate Kipling's rhythmic verse into songs intended for both children and adults reflecting the Edwardian taste for cultivated family entertainment. Books combining Kipling's texts with original musical settings were produced in relatively small numbers and were often heavily used making clean copies increasingly difficult to find. This first edition of The Just So Song Book survives as an appealing example of early twentieth-century literary music publishing and an important adjunct to Kipling's most beloved work. "The texts of the twelve poems contained in the Just So Stories 1902 are here set to music by Edward German. The last song 'Rolling down to Rio' is substituted for 'I've never sailed the Amazon' which is here omitted" Stewart. Livingston 270 describing the first American edition. Stewart 269-A. 1902ref. 40117London: Macmillan and Co 1902. Very good plus. First edition of this children's classic with twelve myths about the origins of the animals illustrated by the author himself. Kipling wrote JUST SO STORIES for his own children particularly his first child Josephine "Effie" to help her fall asleep. Kipling was the son of an artist and the nephew of Edward Burne-Jones; his accomplished illustrations for these stories draw on influences as wide as Navajo art Japanese prints and the drawings of Aubrey Beardsley. While Kipling's own reputation would rise and fall alongside the culture of British imperialism these stories do not borrow from the folklore of other cultures: they constitute their own form of legend which English-speaking children of the next hundred years would experience through the sound of their parents' voices before bed. Large octavo. 9.25'' x 7''. Original full pictorial red cloth stamped in black and white spine lettered and ornamented in white. Illustrated by Kipling with 22 full-page black-and-white plates and vignettes throughout text. First impression in the second issue binding with higher quality white coloring used for stamping the first issue binding flaked severely and required change. 6 249 3 pages. Bookplate on front pastedown ink gift inscription on front free endpaper. Touch of toning to spine rubbing at spine ends and corners some foxing to first and last few leaves. Complete with twenty-two plates and text illustrations throughout. Spine in compartments with raised bands and elephant motif. All edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. Original cloth cover bound in at rear. A very attractive example clean and bright throughout in a charming binding. A classic work of children's literature and one of Kipling's most beloved titles Just So Stories compiles origin tales like "How the Leopard Got its Spots" and "How the Elephant Got his Trunk" and "How the Camel Got His Hump." The book was charmingly illustrated by Kipling himself who reported that the stories were born of out the bedtime tales that he told his daughter. Kipling is of course best known for The Jungle Book and its sequel which earned him the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1907 and secured his place in the canon of English storytelling. Based on folktales and legends that Kipling learned during his childhood in India the Jungle Books were met with huge success upon publication and continue to enthrall readers of all ages to this day. According to Professor Edwin L. Miller their publication "caused even severe critics of Kipling's previous work to admit that he is a writer of inspired genius." Largely focused on man's relationship to nature the Jungle Books in part narrate the tales of Mowgli a human "man-cub" raised by wolves as he tries to find his proper place in the world. For contributions like these Kipling became the first English-language writer and the youngest ever to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature. Fine. Macmillan and Co., Limited unknown books
