Kipling composed the poem in 1895 as a tribute to Leander Starr Jameson following his failed raid against the Boers. It was published here on 4 October shortly after its first appearance in the October 1910 issue of the American Magazine. It was immediately popular and remains Kipling's most enduring poem.
