The vibrant marbled endpapers are completely free from any cracking along the inner hinges completing a highly attractive structurally sound copy. Catalogue Note: This handsome volume forms part of the celebrated Sussex Edition definitively considered the most desirable and luxurious presentation of the author's collected works. Limited to 525 sets of which 500 were for sale the edition was carefully revised by the author in the final years of his life representing his ultimate definitive text. The volume is beautifully bound by James Burn featuring fine gilt tooling raised bands in six compartments and elegant marbled endpapers. Printed on high-quality handmade paper bearing a Ganesha watermark the book showcases a superb tactile quality with its top-edge gilt and uncut lower and fore-edges. While complete sets of this edition are incredibly rare in part because a substantial portion of the unbound sheets was destroyed by bombing during the London Blitz in 1941 individual volumes are highly sought after by collectors looking to experience the zenith of twentieth-century fine press production. Originally published in 1904 Traffics and Discoveries is a masterful collection of short fiction showcasing a remarkable thematic range and stylistic evolution. The volume gathers some of the author's most poignant and celebrated stories including the hauntingly beautiful "They" and the pioneering science-fiction tale "Wireless." Alongside these deeply atmospheric pieces the collection features robust naval adventures introducing the unforgettable Petty Officer Pyecroft as well as incisive realistic stories reflecting the complexities of the South African War. Blending the supernatural with the mechanical and profound emotional delicacy with sharp imperial observation it remains a dynamic and enduring collection. Macmillan and Company hardcover
