1910réf. C82055London: Alston Rivers 1910. First Edition. Hardback. No Dust Jacket. Hardcover Hardcover. Good. First Edition. Hardback. No Dust Jacket. 8vo. pp xvi 440. Original publisher's blue cloth lettered gilt on spine and on front cover. First Edition. The second of the author's two future-war novels. These two novels are the sum total of his literary output. Kipling 1885-1947 an American both of whose books were published in London saw service as a Major in the American Ambulance Service during WWI. He is buried in Arlington Cemetary his wife next to him. A reviewer wrote: ""The Shadow of Glory is written with so much reason and with such an air of verity that politicians diplomats commanders and rulers may well take heed and realise that unless there is some strong united effort for peace universal war will soon involve all the great nations of the earth."" The author realising that an appendixis unusual for a purely imaginary story provides an Introduction to his long Appendix pp. 385-440 that as the reviewer said ""contains lists of the navies and Powers engaged their battle organisation the war strength of the land forces explanatory notes on technical details and a bibliography of naval and military subjects international law and statistical works which make valuable reference for those interested in the preservation of the world's peace."" Strikingly accurate in many respects predictive of World War I in Europe even to Russia joining the Allies with the action also taking place in the Pacific Manchuria and also involving the Japanese. In Bleiler: Imaginary wars and battles. Bookplate on the front pastedown of Jo and Bryan Hanson. Slight marking and wear to covers with two tiny nicks at spine hinges otherwise very good minus with clean text. Alston Rivers, hardcover

Day writes that "people uninterested in poetry 'qua' poetry were thrilled by the splendor and spread of empire as glorified in this work. Kipling's Toryism made the mediocre Alfred Austin the poet laureate in 1896 but Kipling was the unofficial laureate of the British empire." One of Britain's best-known writers Rudyard Kipling 1865-1936 is most famous for his works portraying the lives of the native population and colonialists on the Indian subcontinent. He was born in Bombay where his father ran an art school and he lived in India until the age of six. He was sent to school in England but chose to return to the East at 18. He proved to be a prolific author writing novels tales for children and adults and many poems. Kipling's wife was American and they lived for a time in Vermont but from 1896 the couple settled in England. Among his many honors are a Nobel Prize 1907 and the Gold Medal of the Royal Society of Literature 1926 which had previously only been awarded to Scott Meredith and Hardy. Copies of the present book are easy to find but they are not so readily available in reasonably priced pretty bindings like the one offered here. Methuen and Co unknown books
