1892rif. 157451892. London: William Heinemann 1892. 8 pp undated ads. Original salmon cloth decorated in brown. First Edition of Kipling's only serious attempt at literary collaboration. A Vermonter Wolcott Balestier was an American author and publisher's agent in London; in fact in 1890 he and Heinemann had founded the Heinemann & Balestier publishing house in Leipzig books in English for the Continental market. He had written about the American "Wild West" and Kipling of course had written about India. THE NAULAHKA a misspelling of "naulakha" which in Hindu means nine lakhs i.e. 900000 rupees is an odd tale that combines these two environments into "A Story of East and West" -- a man from a Western boom-town attempts to get possession of a fabulous jewel in India. In December 1891 six months before this was published Balestier suddenly died at age 29 of typhoid fever in Dresden. Kipling had met Wolcott's sister Carrie and just a month after Wolcott died she became Kipling's wife; the Kiplings built their first home in Vermont and in memory of her brother named it "Naulakha" -- spelled correctly. The newlywed Kiplings lived in Vermont for four years toward the end of which Kipling wrote CAPTAINS COURAGEOUS about the Massachusetts fishing fleet; but it all came crashing down when Wolcott's brother Beatty was arrested for assaulting Kipling -- there was an altercation after Kipling had created a little garden on land he owned but had allowed Beatty to hay: the Kiplings fled to England. This is an unusually clean copy just about fine a hint of rubbing at the spine ends; such condition is scarce for this book in view of its soil-prone salmon-colored binding. 1930rif. 158381930. Garden City NY: Doubleday Doran & Company 1930. Original light yellow wrappers lettered in green. First Edition of this short story being the American copyright issue -- 75 copies printed and privately distributed in August 1930 in order to secure copyright protection in America. The main story is the voyage generally reckoned to have taken place in or shortly after 60 AD during which St. Paul was shipwrecked on the island of Malta then called Melita -- the account of which given in Acts 27-28 has been said to be the most vivid account of a voyage and shipwreck in the whole of Greek and Latin literature. In Kipling's story that voyage is described in the conversation of three reminiscing seamen whose meeting provides a typically Kiplingesque "frame" for the main story kipling.org. This tale then appeared in the September issue of London Magazine and was subsequently collected in 1932 in LIMITS AND RENEWALS the last collection published during Kipling's life. A fine copy. Richards A389; Stewart 592. Housed in a morocco-backed slipcase with inner chemise. unknown books

1890rif. 158361890. Philadelphia: J.B. Lippincott Co. January 1891 actually Dec 1890. Original printed wrappers. First American Appearance of this novel occupying almost the entirety 97 pages of this monthly issue. Lippincott's Monthly Magazine was on a roll! Over the course of twelve months they introduced readers to three amazing novels: Arthur Conan Doyle's THE SIGN OF FOUR complete in the February 1890 issue Oscar Wilde's THE PICTURE OF DORIAN GRAY complete in the July 1890 issue and then this one. In February 1890 Kipling's agent A.P.Watt had negotiated for Kipling to deliver to Lippincott this novel -- for which they issued a UK copyright edition in November 1890 the true first edition. New York publishers John Lovell / United States Book Co. with London agent Wolcott Balestier and Kipling in-law were all set to publish this in early December 1890 when. The book's publication was held up until the American magazine version. could appear on the newstands in late December in Lippincott's Monthly Magazine cover-dated January 1891" Richards. This is a remarkably bright copy fine except for chipping away of the bottom quarter-inch of the spine. Quite uncommon in this condition. Richards E1-E3 plus see his A49-A51.
