1899réf. 527870New York: Boosey & Co 1899. Softcover. Fair. Later printing possibly the first American edition. Folio. Two nested bifolia with a single sheet insert making ten pages. Outer bifolium separated along the fold but both leaves are present inner bifolium nearly separated edgewear owner name on the front cover and toning and soiling to the exterior a complete but fair only copy. Plate imprint "E. 7 - 7." This song was originally published in London in 1899 by The Daily Mail to raise money for soldiers and their families during the Second Boer War. The original front cover printed the statement "For every copy sold of this song one shilling goes to The Daily Mail fund for the relief of the sufferers by the war." This charitable effort was reportedly the first of its kind. Kipling wrote the lyrics specifically to be used in this fashion and is quoted as saying "It's catchpenny verse and I want it to catch just as many pennies as it can" going on to remark that it is not something he would ever care to reprint "so there is no need of copyrighting it in America. If anyone wants to sing it take care that the proceeds go to our men" Victoria and Albert Museum. The song was an enormous hit and though the exact amount raised is unknown it certainly succeeded in catching a lot of pennies; what is not certain is whether or not Boosey & Co. took care to contribute part of their proceeds from this American publication as nothing is printed indicating that they did. An interesting reprint that appears to be a bit more uncommon than the original. Boosey & Co unknown
1910réf. 526716London: The Frederick Harris Company 1910. Softcover. Very Good. Sheet music. Folio. Two nested bifolia making eight pages. Composer's name stamp on the front cover some light toning to the exterior and bumping to the corners including a nick to the ends of the fold of the outer bifolium still a complete and very good copy. For voice or piano monologue with no vocal melody. Plate number "F.H. 810." The front cover features a black and white portrait of whom we assume to be the composer of the piece Frederic Dale. "These words are reprinted from Mr. Rudyard Kipling's The Seven Seas by permission of the author" printed above the music. OCLC locates only three physical holdings. The Frederick Harris Company unknown
1915réf. 526316Cincinnati: The John Church Company 1915. Softcover. Very Good. Sheet music. Folio. Three nested bifolia with a single-sheet-insert making 14 pages. Ex-library with a label and perforated stamp on the front cover and a date stamp 1916 on page three minor edgewear and light soiling to the exterior very good. For voice and piano. Plate number 17434 - 11. The front cover states "Written for and sung by David Bispham." Bispham was born in Philadelphia to a Quaker family and was barred from studying dramatic singing by his mother so he did not take it up until he was an adult. Starting out he faced a lot of discouragement but he went on to become one of America's leading baritones. His New York Times obituary describes him as "one of the foremost figures in the American concert opera and concert field. The John Church Company unknown
