1897réf. 211Kipling Rudyard. Hindu Tales In Black and White. Translated from English by V.N. Ofrosimov. St. Petersburg 1897 107 pp. 22 x 15 cm. Kipling is the most "Russian" of all Western writers of the 20th century not in terms of character or worldview but in terms of the intensity of his influence. No other country in the world loved The Jungle Book so much the best cartoon based on it was made in the USSR the best music for the radio play was written by Gubaidulina herself children of all Soviet generations played Mowgli Bagheera and Shere Khan and by the way we correctly adjusted the gender of Kipling's two main characters. The cat who walks by himself became a cat in our version and the fairy tale became more accurate funnier and more sarcastic and Bagheera who was also a brave young man in Kipling's version turned into a cunning queen of the jungle sometimes protecting Mowgli sometimes in love with him; a kind of Catherine with a young favorite. But most importantly Kipling became the foremost poet in Russia. At the same time he is rather marginal in England and even more so in the United States where incidentally his favorite was Eliot an avant-gardist and certainly not an imperialist; "A bad poet who writes excellent poems" he said of Kipling and this is a very accurate description. Despite Kipling's popularity in the USSR translations of his works began long before the October Revolution and the establishment of Soviet power. The first translations appeared in 1896 and at the beginning of the 20th century several new translations were published each year. In 1916 an 11-volume collection of his works was released. The book on offer Hindu Tales 1897 is one of the first translations of Kipling into Russian. It is in decent condition with a worn cover from the era and the stamp of a private collector. WorldCat shows only two copies in libraries worldwide Berkeley and Yale.

Introductory note by Parish inside the front cover: 'The following article was written for the Kipling Society's Journal and is here printed by courtesy of its Editor.' The piece begins: 'It was not long after our arrival in 1940 as the tenants of Bateman's that we learnt that Mr. Kipling had a sister and we wondered what manner of lady she might be little expecting ever to meet her. Judge then of our pleasure when last July five years later a letter arrived from Mr. Brooking founder of our Society saying that Mrs. Fleming whose home was in Edinburgh was on a visit to London and had expressed the wish to see Bateman's again and that he would escort her. The date was fixed for July 10th and at midday I met them at Etchingham station. Now how better can I describe this most charming little lady than by saying that she was exactly what you would wish a sister of Mr. Kipling to be.' A letter from Mrs Fleming to Parish dated from 6 West Coats Edinburgh on 17 September 1945 is printed over one and a half pages. Surprisingly scarce: no copy in the British Library or on OCLC WorldCat and the only copy traced on COPAC in the National Trust collections. Newspaper cutting of letter from Evelyn C.
