Published as a lifetime edition of Rudyard Kipling it is part of the prestigious "Library of Foreign Writers" series edited by the future Nobel laureate Ivan Bunin marking it as a project of significant literary ambition. The volume is distinguished by its original illustrated title page created by Ivan Bilibin the master of Russian Art Nouveau and children's book illustration whose distinctive style elevates this as a work of art. The selection of stories translated by Nikolai Pusheshnikov introduced Kipling's complex narratives of British India to the Russian intelligentsia. As a pre-revolutionary publication from a famed literary series with a direct connection to Bunin and featuring Bilibin's artwork this book is a highly collectible artifact of early 20th-century Russian publishing and cultural exchange.
