1901rif. 159431901. London: Macmillan and Co. 1901. 2 pp undated ads. Original red cloth with Ganesha device in gilt. First English Edition of the book that "is acknowledged as Kipling's masterpiece in fiction. The novel is the finest written about the India of the British Empire" CGEL. It follows the adventures of an orphan son of a British soldier who is raised by an Indian woman becomes a disciple to a Lama and ultimately becomes an undercover agent as well. The illustrations are by John Lockwood Kipling the author's father. The American edition is considered to have been published earlier though in the same month as the English one. As with most of Kipling's British editions published by Macmillan the binding is red cloth with in gilt the "Ganesha" device -- an elephant's head with a swastika the latter had been a ubiquitous symbol in India for millennia; its use ceased in the early 1930s when events in Germany gave the symbol a whole new meaning. This is a very good-plus copy minor rubbing of the elephant-head and at the extremities; as always there is some foxing of the endpapers and of the frontispiece tissue guard. Richards A174; Stewart 254; Livingston 250. One of the books selected as a "Modern Library 100" for the 20th Century. Provenance: the front free endpaper bears the inked inscription "Jos Pulford "Alcinous" S.S." Between 1901 and 1905 "J. Pulford" was the master and commander of the SS Alcinous a British steamship launched in December 1899 that transported goods and passengers between the UK London and Glasgow Hong Kong and several ports in Australia; the vessel would not survive the Great War. unknown

Ltd in October 1901. The novel is notable for its detailed portrait of the people culture and varied religions of India: "The book presents a vivid picture of India its teeming populations religions and superstitions and the life of the bazaars and the road." The story unfolds against the backdrop of the Great Game the political conflict between Russia and Britain in Central Asia. The novel popularized the phrase and idea of the Great Game. The story is set after the Second Anglo-Afghan War which ended in 1881 and before the Third 1919 probably in the period of 1893 to 1898. Kimball O'Hara was a child like many others living on the streets of India in the early 1900s. That was until he befriended a Buddhist lama and became his disciple. The story of Kim follows our cheeky fun-loving hero as he journeys across northern India - from Lahore to the vast beauty of the Himalayan mountains - in the company of the lama. The two of them have different goals but the physical paths they follow are very similar. Before leaving Lahore Kim is entrusted by one of his father's friends to deliver a very special message. Through this he meets a member of the British Secret Service and discovers secrets he couldn't have imagined. As the story progresses and his journey continues Kim begins to learn more and more about what is known as the Great Game. As we follow Kim we see him transformed from a simple vagabond into a sharpened operative in the dangerous world of politics betrayal and death. All the excitement of Kim's adventures takes place in the backdrop of a beautiful country full of amazing sights incredible sounds and an extremely rich culture. In what is considered by many to be Kipling's finest work he draws on his own experiences of living in India to tell an unforgettable and action-packed story within a vivid and accurate setting.
